Possible to share storage device connected to Nvidia Shield over network?

by amenraymen

Hey guys

I'm not very familiar with Android at all and I consider buying an Nvidia Shield, but there's only one thing stopping me. I want to connect external storage to the Shield and then share it via SMB over my network (transferring files from my computer to hdd connected to Shield, in other words a NAS). Is this possible?

I currently have this setup with an RPi, but would like to switch things up.

Thanks in advance

Edit: Found a pretty good solution .

Not that I can think of. I mean you can do what you said and remotely send files to your android device like though ES Filemanager. but not sure if that's the solution you were expecting. I'm curious why you want this kind of setup and not just have your external HDD on the network? You trying to eliminate network traffic when playing video or something?

Sending files to Android TV is a bit awkward. But for media, I use Kodi to just access the SMB share directly and if I want to mess with local storage like add roms and stuff, I'll unplug the removable storage USB drive and deal with it directory on a computer.

Kodi supports SMB, NFS, AFP, FTP and probably others.

You can easily turn the Pi into a NAS, though It will be limited in speed due to the Ethernet port speed and the fact that USB shares the bus. I don't think the shield is the right tool for the job, especially when you can buy an actual NAS for the same price roughly.
