Android tv apps

by kingjohns

Hello all :-}

If could only have five apps on your android tv, which apps would you choose? excluding: netflix, hbo go/now, youtube, crunchyroll and all famous streaming apps and common

Which apps you will highly recommend for a newbie? Youtube has a nicer ui compared to the ps4 version of youtube? what are some other apps which have nice ui only on android tv?

Are you asking for 5 hidden gems that aren't your typical (Kodi, Plex, Youtube, Netflix)?

  1. Pluto TV Pluto TV has a set of live streaming channels for free. It integrates into Google's "live channel" app so it feels like a TV. This is a huge thing I feel Android TV has over it's competitors. It's a nice interface and has some great channels. Great for when you want to veg and channel surf. Something you can't do when you cut the cord like I did.

  2. Sideload Launcher If you side load apps you need to get this. makes launching them a breeze. With the new update, any app that is side loaded has mouse support with the right controller joystick now. So Chrome is actually usable now and a great app to side load

  3. GDriveSync I use this app to sync my game data between my Shield and my android phone by syncing to my google drive. So Lets say I'm playing some retro game like Chronotrigger. I have to go to work so I sync to the cloud. I go to work and on my lunch break I sync to grab data, play some more, and re-sync my data. When I go home I re-sync grab the data and play some more. SO basically I get to play the same save file seamlessly between Home TV and Phone.

  4. Vendetta Online Free for Android users, and free no monthly subscription for android users. If you enjoy games like EVE online but don't want something as daunting check this out. It's a Space Flight Sim MMORPG game.

  5. ES Filemanager The best app to navigate your filesystem and copy/move things. Even lets you set up an FTP server so you can transfer files easily between devices/PCs.

This really illustrates how bad the ecosystem is. Outside of the very main line up, it's hard to come up with 5 things.

Especially if you take out things like ES which I'd bet 98% of this sub uses.

I have a Sony Android TV.

I use Kodi, YouTube, ES File Explorer, Syncthing and ATV4 Screensaver as Daydream. Syncthing is a life saver.

Plex and ePSXe do everything I need.

  1. Plex - The biggest time saver (after ripping all DVDs in). Great interface, utilizes search and recommendations perfectly.
  2. Weather Network - Live channel, accurate information, good use of the notification to give updated forecast.
  3. Pluto TV - nothing further to add
  4. NES emulator - Not a big game person, but good interface and old enough for those games.
  5. Sideload launcher - Only way to work mouse friendly apps like Watch ESPN, LiveStream...

Archos for downloads, Popcorn Time for streaming in a pinch, STB Emulator for my IPTV subscription, ShowBox but it requires a mouse.
