Nvidia Shield TV and external HDDs

by jay_samuel

I have a Shield TV 16GB (brilliant device!) and on connecting an HDD it only shows up in EZ file explorer as usb://2005 I'd like to use this drive in Kodi to build a library for the movies & TV shows saved on there but it doesn't show up in sources. There's not even a mount point in /mnt or /storage For now, I've had to resort to plugging the HDD into my TP-Link w9980 and use Samba - it works, but the maximum speed is 9MB/s Any ideas? Thanks.

Might consider reformatting it. NTFS would be my recommendation.

It's an issue with Nvidia I believe. My Pro does the same but my 16gb works fine, using the same 3tb WD drive. I tried ntfs and exfat, with same result.

I would recommend submitting the issue to the shield forums and see if there's a workaround or if nvidia is aware of issue.

I have a 6TB WD Mybook formatted as Exfat that is directly connected to Shield. I only use it for Kodi.

Edit: From this link it looks like NTFS is not supported.

I've just had a conversation with someone at Nvidia. Apparently they've had alot of reports with WD drives failing to mount properly on the Shield TV. Unfortunately my model wasn't one of the reports, so they've asked me to send a report using their Feedback option in settings. I should receive a reply, and I'll follow up here as others probably have the same problem.

I was told NTFS is supported since Marshmallow.

I went the samba route, but my router has USB 3.0 ports.

Same problem here. I also have a 1 TB WD HDD on exfat.
