Buying a Shield TV - Do I need to buy the remote also?

by wildfig

Hi,

Thanks in advance for reading this. I am buying a Shield TV as a front end for my Plex/Usenet machine which I have set-up upstairs. It is connected to my router wired through powerline, as will be my new Shield TV.

My TV is a Sony KDL-40CX523 and this is the remote .

Will I need to buy the Shield TV Remote or will I be able to use my current remote through HDMI CEC as a replacement? Would there be any tradeoffs or issues if this is the case.

Thanks again

As a Shield tv user, you don't need the remote, but it's awesome.

Migrating from Roku3, the remote is sexy, thin, and rechargeable.

I have the exact same remote and an older Sony TV. The remote works with the Shield through CEC without any issues.

I did get the Shield remote for free with the 500GB Shield though, and I actually quite like it. Should you buy it? Maybe not. But if you can get a similar deal, it may be worth it.

There was an offer where the official remote came free. I'm pretty sure it's over but regardless it's still bundled for free on Amazon if you specifically select "SHIELD <size> + Remote". But anyway, the only thing the remote is good for is the headphones jack. It's lacking in buttons. You can control the Shield via HDMI-CEC, or your phone using the Android TV Remote app, or using a programmable IR remote, or even just using the gamepad that it comes with.

Got my shield today from newegg and it came with a remote. I have a harmony remote and it works just fine too.

Since it runs Android TV you can install the app of the same name on and use that as a remote. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tv.remote

If it was a remote for Sony's new Android TVs then it would work perfectly with the Shield (the one with the huge Netflix button)

Shield currently comes with the remote for free.

See it mentioned here:

Also see here on Amazon that the Shield + remote bundle is the same price as the Shield by itself:

It's not needed I have it, but I ended up just using the android tv remote app on my tablet.

I prefer using the game controller. The remote is nice looking but has less buttons and is very thin...always ends up under the sofa seat cushions :). There seems to be a deal pretty often where the remote is free. That's how I got mine, its looks very premium, but I never use it.

The remote is the best thing ever. Once you have your Kodi set up w/ trakt and need minimal typing, its great. Volume sliding can get a little annoying but still worth it.

I got the remote for free with mine, it was a promotion, but I don't use it often. With HDMI control on my Sony TV, I just use the TV remote.

I use a Logitech Harmony remote to control my shield TV, TV and receiver. It's wife approved
