Nexus Player Still Good?

by jcat4

I purchased the new Apple TV a while ago, and I've become quite tired of its various quirks. I want to switch to Android TV.

Is the Nexus Player still a viable option? I see that it's become less available as of late, and its specs seem fairly dated to some newer, more expensive boxes. I don't want to game on whatever I get aside from SNES/GBA/PSX/N64 emulation; I'd mainly just use Netfilx/Plex/Twitch/Cruchyroll/etc. I also want to ensure whatever I'd get has decent support and will be updated for a while... Is the Nexus Player sufficient for my needs? Are there better options for me? Do I need to wait for a new Nexus (if one is planned)?

I have both the AppleTV 4 and Nexus Player and prefer the AppleTV by a long shot. Nexus Player has worse quirks for me. If you want something better than the AppleTV 4 I think you'd have to go Shield TV.

I really like mine. I use it as my main media player over my Chromecasts and FireTV Stick. You can regularly find the Nexus Player on sale for $50. I got mine for $40 from a Groupon.

Google I/O is just over a month away, so they could announce something new at that conference. If they do, I'm buying it immediately (assuming it's no more than $150).

There are, however, quirks with Android TV. Seems like I'll get random issues every couple weeks that requires a reboot.

I think Android TV will fit your needs. If anything, give a Nexus Player a shot, and if you want more, then the NVIDIA Shield TV is pretty much the recommended upgrade from there as far as performance.

I bought one almost a year ago for the same use as you've laid out and have been happy with the experience. Even game playing like Minecraft and Real Racing 3 have been good.

Yo jcat4, the Nexus Player is available from Google's own store again.

Edit: Nevermind, it's back out of stock. Best to look on ebay.

Or Get a Shield. It's the Nexus but far better. It's also more gaming oriented, but still all around a better streamer than the nexus player.

All of those apps are available.

But I will say, if you had the Apple TV 4, you will notice a performance difference with the Nexus Player. The only other streaming box on the market that is as snappy and responsive as the ATV4 is the shield.

Shield TV. I own a Nexus Player and bought it during Target's fire sale for $25 and was lucky enough to find the Asus Gamepad at Walmart for $30. It's great for what you are looking to do with a device so if you can find it get it. But I would wait to see what's coming during I/O. I'm interested to see if there will be a reboot of the Nexus Player or a new Shield. I like how powerful the Shield is and it's exclusive games, the most recent being Borderlands the Pre-Sequel.

Nexus TV with Pure Nexus ROM is my main TV box

Would definitely suggest just going with the SHIELD and get it while there is a good deal on it. Doubt anything will come this year that is as good. NVIDIA definitely wont release another one while their current one is top dog

I have two of them. They are used for all media consumption and are fantastic devices.
