There was an April Fools joke about watches and TVs being used as a gamepad, but the phone is legitimately coming.
Haven't tried installing on an official AndroidTV, but Droidmote used to have a game mode. Droidmote server require a rooted device.
It will be in the official Android TV Remote app. It's just not released yet (that feature/update).
