How To: Amazon Prime on your AndroidTV

by joeysdad

Verified working on Nexus Player.

  • Sideload Chrome to your device (via whichever method you prefer)
  • Open Chrome from either the Settings -> Apps menu or through Sideload Launcher if you use that.
  • Navigate to Amazon, log in and navigate to Amazon Instant Video section.
  • Click the 3 dots menu in Chrome bar and choose Request Desktop Site.
  • Browse and watch!

Since this is Chrome you must have a mouse of some kind to navigate. I use a Logitech K400 Plus.

Yea, it's a pain in the ass but it does work if there is something you really want to watch on Prime Video.

*Edit - Yes it is in HD. It starts in SD and ramps up to HD as it buffers/senses your bandwidth.

Yep, figured this out when the Shield got the mouse cursor update.

One thing I could not figure out is browser navigation. There is no back button on screen, pressing B on the controller closes the tab.

Edit: I meant on the controller, since we can now use a cursor with the right stick.

HD? Audio/video in sync?

technically don't even need to sideload. you can install chrome to android tv from the desktop version of the play store. and you can use voice command "open chrome" instead of using a launcher since it won't appear on the android tv launcher. note that I'm basing this on shield tv so maybe it is slightly different on nexus player.

Wait... I have an Android TV (Sony) and I just have an Amazon Instant Video app. Is that not what you're talking about?

Thank you for the tip! Works perfectly If we now can get surround sound to work it would be perfect ;)

I wonder if it will do 4k (on the nvidia shield)

There have been a workaround for Amazon Prime using a third party apps and the official Amazon app: http://androidtv.news/2015/12/amazon-prime-video-hack-works-on-android-tv/

Does surround sound work?

Not a free solution, but...

I run PlayOn on my PC and sideloaded the app to Shield TV. It works fine with Android TV.

I just got a sony android TV & it has the Amazon Instant app built in natively.
