What killer feature are you hoping to be announced for AndroidTV soon?

by fraseyboo

With the Google I/O less than 2 weeks away I thought I'd make a post that lists the features that I'd love to see implemented into AndroidTV. Some are more feasible than others but I thought it would be nice to think of the more exciting features Google could announce rather than just a faster chipset.

Off the top of my head I came up with a couple ideas, some would require additional hardware whilst others are purely software:

  • AndroidTV USB tuner - something similar to the USB tuner available for the Xbox One , plugs directly into the back of an existing AndroidTV box and integrates with the live channels app to allow for OTA channels. I know HD Homerun provides a similar solution but I'd prefer a wired solution with no transcoding.

  • Fingerprint sensor for account switching - using a sensor on the remote or the actual box/TV would allow for a multi account Android experience. The fingerprint would work more as an ID rather than a password so that multiple people could use the TV to access their own content without switching in a menu. Fingerprints could also be used to authorize payments on the play store.

  • "OK Google" hotword detection that's always on - would require a USB conferencing microphone ( like this ) for current boxes as keeping the microphone listening on remotes would likely eat a lot of battery but would allow for the user to use Google voice commands without touching the voice button. May require a low power chip to reduce power consumption and allow for sleeping but could be enabled for most existing devices when awake. Probably would not be enabled by default due to privacy concerns.

  • Adding Google Now cards to the homescreen - would make the AndroidTV more of a hub for information, calendar events could be taken from Google calendar and notes from Keep could be pinned to the homescreen making the homescreen a noticeboard for the days activities. Could sync with a whole family's accounts to keep track important events like football practice or family game night whilst providing cards about local events making AndroidTV a personal news outlet.

  • Now on tap integration - kind of an odd idea but would use the subtitles of a live channel to provide information for google now. Say you were watching the news and heard about a local car crash you could use google now to bring up information about it, the news would be displayed using PIP but you would be able to read the full article.

If you were Google what feature would you announce?

Most of those don't really seem necessary for me, for a TV platform.

USB tuner is huge though, and I would love to see it happen. Network tuners are nice, but a local tuner would be good for flexibility/standalone use.

Your list, plus:

  1. Amazon Prime video
  2. Make it a hub, or at least an interface for home automation

I can't stress this enough. The home automation needs to be something you OWN, not just use in their cloud. The Nest debacle has harmed the trust factor between the market and the customers. We need to know that our purchases will add value to our homes for a reasonable amount of time and the lifespan of them will not be cut short with no recourse.

Picture-in-picture would be great as teased by the Android N preview.

It would be nice if it was slicker than traditional pip, so like the ability to move content between different devices. aka, I need to go to the patio, transfer my feed right to my tablet/phone transparently and without interruption.

I wouldn't mind seeing more commitment from google's own apps.

The AndroidTV Photos app has been unable to show my Google photos since launch afaict.

HDHomeRun's solution is wired and does not require transcoding.

My list is close to or works with yours.

  • ability to purchase codec licenses for video and audio codecs (say VC1 for the nexus player or the audio formats)
  • expanded dvr support (seems like they are working on it and it is more a part of "Live Channels" then the system framework.
  • Better search and voice integration in the whole system... sadly, see Apple TV
  • Notification system... again, sadly, see Apple TV
  • System support for usb blu ray drives. Pop in a drive and buy a blu ray player app and you get a disc player as well (codecs needed, see #1).
  • A real remote... they were dumb and left out important buttons in the NP remote and Nvidia followed suit.
  • always on voice (usb mic) and camera support wouldn't be a bad thing

Not a killer feature but would love for PS Vue to make its way to Android TV soon.

I just want a NP with beefed up hardware (high-end SoC, more RAM, more internal storage) and a built-in ethernet port.

As far as the software side of things, get more services onboard. My Samsung SmartTV running Tizen has a better TV-app ecosystem.

Really I'm just kinda being a cheap-ass. If they don't unveil a new NP at I/O then I'm going to wait for a deal on a 500GB Shield TV. $300 is a lot of money.

I would like to see the content providers integrate their apps into Live Channels. Sling is the obvious one, HBO Now is the other... however I would also like to see channels created from my own content, or from streaming services like Netflix and Hulu.

For example Plex has all of my Movies, Home Videos, and Pictures. I would like to have a channel for each folder or playlist in Plex. It doesn't require Plex to always be running, just to randomize the content into playlist in a day/time format that Live Channels understands. Then if i open that channel, launch Plex play the file starting from the corresponding timestamp.

Netflix could do the same. Take their suggestions for me and put it into a live channel or 2 that i can tune into anytime. Sometimes i just want to turn the tv on and not spend 20 minutes finding content.

I've seen this posted elsewhere in this sub-reddit. I don't want to take credit for the idea.

Full compatibility with Chromecast Audio, so it can be a zone and part of a group. Also have the ability to act as a Chromecast audio control point/hub.

DVR capabilities with network and USB tuners. Edit: That can be shared to other devices via a standardized file sharing protocol (like DLNA, SMB ...)

Native captive portal support

Video syncing - multiroom

I've been thinking about this as IO approaches. I don't think we'll see much unless there are unreleased Android N features that they are going to show-off similar to Now On Tap last year (which I still never use). We are not going to see any Nexus Devices at IO. If this happens it will be around the release of N, so Sept-Oct.

I think we will see more about Brillo/Weave and I hope that the TV can become one of the hubs. There was rumor of an Echo-esk device, but I think the "listening" feature would be a big start.

I agree that a big priority should be getting more apps and getting them to integrate with existing features... Universal search, Live Channels, Recs. I think a Keynote announcement of ESPN etc would be possible.

Multiuser support - Getting multiple Play accounts or subscriptions would be huge. I know this was teased, but How it happens it key. I don't want it the way it is on Tablets.

Smarter recommendations. New episode of X show is added to Hulu, or recorded on my Tablo. I want to see that, not just what "they" want me to watch.

chowder007

a new box. I like some of your ideas though.

hpka

A new device to run it on...

yepyoureyouryore

I'd like to see Recommended bar on the top customizable, new themes, more apps supporting leanback, the ability to reorder not just the apps and games sections but also reorder or add custom sections

NiceGuyNate

Chrome on Android tv would be great

KagitinganSt

I just want the YouTube and Live channels apps to behave like all the other apps. I want them to stop when I get back to the homescreen. The way it works is annoying.

ycnz

The plex client fixing their 24Hz bug would be rather handy.

Tired8281

I'd like them to use some of their market position muscle to fill out the Play Store. Maybe they could require apps to have basic Android TV support (icon for leanback, basic TV remote support, that kinda thing) to be compliant with the N api level. At least then the new apps will be available to us, going forward.

phdzor

dvb-t/t2 tuner for nvidia shield tv would be awesome

rdf-

Not really a software feature, but I would love for them to release an Android TV stick.

It would be great for those times when traveling out of town and you prefer maximum portability, instead of lugging around a Nexus player, HDMI cable, plus the power adapter.

Sure I have a Chromecast, but sometimes it is a hassle to get it working right when I'm at a hotel. It also doesn't help that it only saves one wifi network so I have to be reconfiguring it every time.

cheeto0

More apps and services integrated into the channels and recording.

serpentxx

Mainly want to see a new Nexus player with Dual tuner (watch+record at same time) and GB Ethernet

Wayne

Offline storage of Google Play videos and music in case the Internet is out and my daughter wants to watch one of her movies or listen to something.

Mouse support across the OS.

Touch support (make the A button on a gamepad = touch and the d-pad = swiping.
