Is this a good android tv box? (help)

by kittymeow77

Hi everyone. I hope this is ok to post. We are getting rid of cable and someone in our local area buys tv boxes and programs them, i would just like to know if it is a good product. Here is their description..

New Model M8S+ Quad core with the new 5.1 Lollipop, High Definition, 4K ultra High Definition and 3D support. Amlogic S812 processor. 1000mgps Ethernet. Fully re-loaded with Kodi 16.1 Jarvis and all the addons

thank you in advance!

Its not an "Android TV" box, its a TV box with an Android OS on it. The only Android TV boxes are the Nvidia Shield, the Asus Nexus Player, and the Forge.

The difference is one has an OS and an app store made for a 10' interface (ie tv) and the other is a the smart phone OS on a box. As you can assume, the latter can be sorta janky.

How much is he charging you? Cause Kodi is an official app on the play store for free.

EDIT: I think there is another subreddit for these types of boxes, but I cant find it (on mobile). Maybe try r/htpc or r/kodi, but you'll prob get yelled at in r/kodi.

You could buy that janky box for $40.00 and then spend about ten minutes to add Kodi with addons I assume you are being charged a lot more

Keep in mind that when they advertise "FREE TV AND MOVIES" they are not offering you some magical way to get around cable. Most of the sources that provide access in these add-ons are illegally distributing content. While you will likely never face repercussions for using them, these add-ons can be unreliable, low quality and prone to being shut down. If they are "shut down" the "programming" you pay this person for is effectively useless.

Better to buy a box and learn how to do it yourself, so when the add-ons break, you can find new ones.
