Downloading content from Play Movies

by PrecariousLettuce

So I have a few TV shows and movies purchased through Google Play Movies. I currently have a chromecast, and streaming works "okay". My internet connection is not quite stable enough to stream in HD consistently, it'll constantly be dropping in and out, and sometimes going down to truly awful looking quality.

Does Google Play Movies on Android TV permit downloading of content prior to viewing? The Google support page https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/2851696?hl=en-AU mentions that it works on "Android" devices, but it's not clear if that includes Android TV.

Specifically the Nexus Player I guess, as that's nice and cheap. I'm aware that it has very limited storage, but I'd only ever really want to have one thing downloaded at any given time. I'm happy to queue it up downloading a few hours before I want to watch it.

I have not seen a way to do this but I'm not entirely sure. I'm pretty sure there isn't a way tho.

I believe you can download to your PC or maybe your phone and then cast it over to your Nexus Player/Chromecast Hopefully by streaming it locally you'll have better luck with the quality.

Edit; misread.

I don't think you can. I think you have to download to another device - phone, tablet, etc and then cast. I do not believe google play lets you download to a PC.

I hope Google will change this. It is not a rental. These are movies that are owned. When you buy a DVD or Blu-Ray they come with digital downloads. Should an online digital purchases be different.

Maybe it is just the way the tech works? Hopefully this feature will be added to the Android TV app.

I don't think this feature is exposed in the TV app
