Which is a better choice, Amlogic s812 or s905 or Rockchip rk3368?

by RollitUPP

I'm looking to get an Android TV Box from Amazon, which processor would be best to get (Amlogic s812, s905, or rockchip rk3368)? I'm looking at boxes that have 2gb of RAM & 16gb storage, which processor would pair best with that? I'll use the box mainly for streaming live HD TV channels, HD shows and live HD sports via sopcast, acestream or whatever provides high quality live sports. Also some apps like Spotify, YouTube etc. (Specifically i saw a Tronsmart MX3 with 2gb RAM and 16gb storage, Android 15.1, amlogic s812. Is that a good choice?)

Any insight would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Just FYI, lots of people ask about these boxes, and lots of people state they are not official androidtv boxes, but just boxes that run android and have HDMI out.

Main differences are, androidtv is an offshoot of the android operating system, designed to look good on a TV and navigate well with remotes, and android has hardware guidelines for 3rd party manufacturers.

Currently the main official android TV devices are:

  • Asus Nexus Player
  • Nvidia Shield TV
  • Various Tvs with androidTV integrated.

The only boxes this sub covers are those that specifically run AndroidTV, such as the Nvidia Shield TV and the Nexus player. You're better off trying r/minipcs for a good/better answer to your question than I personally can give.

However, I have used rockchip boxes before switching over and I will say that they have a lot of community support for ROMs and rooting over at freaktab and are a pretty popular choice in many budget Android boxes. They typically pair with a Mali 400 or 450 GPU though which is severely underpowered IMO. And no matter which one you buy, all of these boxes are only skinned with launchers to be used on TVs and most of the Android apps are not optimized for the hardware nor is the operating system for that matter. You end up with a very shaky user experience when all is said and done. I would consider looking into the shield TV for the money. For about the same price, you get better support, regular updates without the hassle of having to flash firmware updates manually, everything is OTA, and you get versions of your apps specifically made/optimized for the hardware.

Until I bought my Sony TV, I have used a Minix box. OTA updates, full qwerty remote + airmouse... No major complaints.

Offici device list has expanded since google I/O earlier this year, such as the upcoming Xiaomi AndroidTV box.

End of the day boxes like the one you mentioned are not terrible, but they dont run the AndroidTV Operating system, just basic Android meant for mobiles/tablets.

Really all you are missing out on is a smooth interface and apps designed to be navigated by remote and look good on a television.

Best you can do to the non AndroidTV boxes is install Kodi or Plex
