Nexus Player Vs. Raspberry Pi 2 with Kodi

by PlausibleDeniabiliti

I saw a used Nexus Player selling for $80 online and I'm quite tempted to purchase it. I currently use a Raspberry Pi 2 that is running Openelec & Kodi as the heart of my HTPC. What advantages, besides Netflix & Prime, would i have with the Nexus Player vs. Kodi with some good add-ons?

I'd wait for the xioami Android TV that is coming soon.

Do you watch Youtube at all? If you do, YouTube on Kodi has been slowly getting more shitty by the day. No 60FPS playback, and limited to 720P.

All the Android apps, a remote, and slightly better performance.

I like tbe idea of having AndroidTV running kodi fulltime as you can launch android apps within kodi

I own both Pi2 & Nexus Player. With my hdhomerun prime, Ethernet was the only way to go to watch live cabletv streams. But the NP actually handles this wirelessly. Note, using an Asus n66u dual band router. 720/1080 work fine, big ass 1080p mkv also work fine. No need for an MPEG license. Kodi runs much faster and Android x86 is supported.

Using CBS News app works fine, using the Kodi video add-on and it times out eventually. Oh and the NP remote lacks volume buttons. For external hard/flash drives, a cheap otg to USB adapter works fine.

Be prepared to do several hours of updating when it's out of the box and connected.
