Is Android TV dead ?

by vaguhs

I am a Nexus Phone user an an long time Google customer. All my services are on Google my email , my media , my backup. I want to get a GOOGLE set top box for my TV , I'm currently using a Roku , but I want to get a Nexus player . As the nexus player is discontinued and there is the Xiomi coming out is there any hope for Google to keep developing Android TV or It will switch to Chrome cast. there is Some Sony tv's with Android TV but I don't want to Change my TV

I want to get Google Home , and connect it to my phone , my tv my tablet. The Current Nexus Player is too slow for 4k and I want to be future proof. The Xiomi is not Nexus so I'm not sure if it will be updated + I don't want bloatware.

Can some tell me how can I get Google on My TV without paying for Nvidia Shield $200

Android TV as a platform is not going anywhere. In time, I bet it will dominate the smart TV market. But yes, your STB options are currently limited right now.

You want future proof, good updates and overall a reliable device. The market has dictated that costs $200 right now. Either wait for competition or bite the bullet.

Just get the shield. It's ridiculously powerful.

If you don't want a xiaomi, you're being pickier than this market can afford at that moment. Get a chromecast

You should change you're question to is Nexus player for Android Tv Dead. Clearly Android Tv is not dead just because the device you prefer is not made anymore. Xiaomi won't have bloatware it' will run the same leanback launcher. I believe Sharp is supposed to have and Android Tv device out soon as well.

Personally its working on becoming the dominant OS for the living room but is still in its infancy, waiting for android N etc, im kind of tired of waiting so im buying a small intel mini pc and running kodi full time, because that at least lets you plug in any usb peripheral and get drivers for it (think usb tv tuners)

For what's it's worth I recently got the Shield TV and don't regret it at all. Though if you're price conscious then maybe wait until you can at least get a deal, seems like they're always on some kind of sale. Mine came with a second controller free, I've seen some for $180 locally, others in the past came with the remote free.

Google will continue to support the Android TV platform 100%, even if they are not making Android TV hardware.

For a company to get official Android TV certification they must meet a ton of requirements set by Google. While this does not guarantee a forever stream of updates, it is highly unlikely that anyone would go through the trouble of releasing an Android TV box and then not update it for a reasonable amount of time.

With the one exception of the bizarre Razor Forge, any box that is officially Android TV certified should be seen as a safe purchase.

I'd also like a refresh for the NP, but it looks like Google is backing the new Xiaomi box as the $100 replacement. If you want a future-proof Android TV experience, NVIDIA just released some new features for the Shield TV box. I just got one and it's probably one of the best gadgets you can buy for the money. Super smooth, no lag seen yet. I bought mine with the free remote, and it comes with a gamepad. Both of those have a headphone jack for private listening. I don't think anything else will touch the Shield TV as far as performance or features for a long time. I'm quite impressed that it's been out for over a year and still has no equal.

The price is a bit high, but it's nice to know you're set for several years instead of buying a new $100 box every year.

As I have both a Nexus player & a Sony Android TV I'd suggest you either a. Get the nVidia shield, b. upgrade to 😴 the sony TV (which is awesome), or c. Hurry up & wait like the rest of us.

Android TV is far from dead. It's only growing in popularity and capability. There's new apps and games coming out all the time.

The Nexus Player was a reference device for OEMs. There are now devices in the market that are more capable than the NP.

It seems the shield is the way to go.

An as I was about to get one , this happens , FCC filing for a refresh of the Nexus player . Now what ? Another reason I need Android TV is I can't get Google play music on the Roku.

True that, but I'm more than comfortable with the glitches now, though not at first. I actually have another sony TV, a none smart TV & I've loved it the last 5 years it's functionality is excellent. The older TV convinced me to buy sony with the new one. There aren't any glitches with the sony smart TV that won't be present with any other android TV device (built in or stand alone).
