I want to put the TV display to sleep and just play music, the same way I would with my phone. It's just too bright to sleep with it on but the music would be nice to keep playing. Any ideas?

My Panasonic plasma TV does it. There is an option just to switch off panel's TV.
Most modern TV's have a picture off option in their settings (possibly in their quick menu too), you could try using a black screensaver and put the shield to sleep (although I'm not sure how music playing is affected). Another option would be to get a USB to phono adapter like this and then output the sound through some external speakers.
Are you pumping the HDMI from the shield only into the TV? If so you don't have much choice but to leave the TV on. I don't know of any TV that will push the audio only out while it's turned off.
I bought a Chromecast Audio for that specific use and it works great.
