How many of you use an Android TV device as a replacement for your Smart TV's native software?

I'm thinking about doing this with my Nexus Player. Only problem being it does not output to 4K, but I suppose I could just switch to the native apps when I want to view something in 4K. My main reason for wanting to connect my Nexus Player again is for Moonlight Streaming.

Sounds like you want a Shield m8

I believe that's the purpose. Otherwise you'd just use your TV's apps.

Bought a Shield to replace the horribly slow UI on our Samsung tv. Best decision I ever made.

I have a Sony X850C which comes with Android TV as its OS, I've considered getting an Android TV device because of updates. Sony has said the 2015 TV's will get Marshmallow but that'll prob be it.

I sold my Macmini, Sat receiver and old 'smart' TV and replaced it with a 2015 1080p Sony Android TV. Apart from Sony's own software add-on, the TV itself is pretty marvelous. Only bug is the Satellite channels keep getting updated and mess with Fav list (just Sat not territorial TV). Kodi works with no issues whatsoever.

I'm also planning to buy a Google Home and connect it all up

My LG smart tv isn't even connected to my network.

I have a LG Google TV, using the Nexus Player as primary interface lol

I use a NP on my smartTV, but usually it is to run things from my server with Kodi or to Chromecast things to the TV.

I bought a dumb TV (read: not a Smart TV) last year because I don't want to deal with the headaches of a UI that could become outdated and stay unupdated in the later years of its life. But my Nexus Player can be easily replaced...so it's the main way I interface with my TV.

I do. I got a Vizio TV from my grandmother and replaced it's motherboard (apparently, the NAND has an extremely short life and can just totally burn out in about 4 years). I figured, $80 and I have a brand new 1080p 3D Smart TV, right? Why not?

Bloody hell that Smart TV software is absolutely abysmal. It's fucking terrible. It's extremely slow, and it's powered by Yahoo's Connected TV platform, which has very few good apps, and of the few good apps that are there, only about half work. YouTube and Netflix are now broken, despite the TV installing about 4 or 5 updates. The games are total crap. The TV remote has a game controller on one side, and absolutely zero apps take advantage of it. It was a shitty experience.

So now I just plug my Shield in and act like that horrid mess never existed.
