Tip: Use Android TV as a WiFi hotspot (x-post from /r/theNvidiaShield)

by jadelord

I was frustrated since the hotel I stayed offered no Wifi, but just ethernet. I thought well why worry? since I have my Nvidia Shield!

So I connected the ethernet to shield but... wifi hotspot/tethering option was hidden! FML! But alas desperation is the mother of invention.

  • Installed Sideload Launcher from play store
  • Install PdaNet+ from their website with assistance from ES File Manager

And it is on! Wireless goodness!

Nice , did it interfere with the controller at all?

Clever. Will probably never use it, but good to know ;)

Pretty interesting. So in theory you could use Android TV devices as WiFi extenders. It would be nice if you could also enable it as a WiFi repeater/bridge: phone/laptop <-> Android TV WiFi repeater/bridge <-> WiFi router.

I wish this was built into Android TV vs relying on an app.

What did you connect to your new wifi hotspot? a smart phone?

This is actually very interesting. Are there other Android apps that allow you to toggle these settings via an app instead of via the settings.
