NVIDIA Shield will be ‘first all-in-one Plex box’ as it gains full Media Server feature this month

Here's the actual Plex post, which the linked blog left out:

It also stole the image from the plex post. Bad form, 9to5google.

Very interesting... now I just need it to run my other server apps as well. Until Sickbeard/Sickrage/Sonarr and Couchpotato run on it, I'll have to keep my living room laptop running anyway, so I'll save myself the trouble of copying downloads over the network to the Shield by just keeping them on the machine that downloads them.

I wonder what kind of performance it will have when transcoding, specifically multiple streams? 8 cores should be able to handle it pretty well I guess, but I wonder if it will be able to transcode a stream or two and play back simultaneously? My plex server gets a workout, combining it with the player could be too much.

This will make the 500GB model fairly attractive to casual plex users that don't plan to game and don't have a terribly large library.

I have the 16gb Version (with a 32gb card to expand the storage a little). currently my plex server runs on a mac mini and all my content is on NAS drives, so nothing stored locally on the MacMini. Would be the same case here I would hope. I wonder is there anyway to port over my existing library so it keeps the watched / unwatched status.

This makes me incredibly excited. I was a running boxee w/ NAS for years but when that died out, I had to switch to Plex and a machine always running.

Finally. No need for a dedicated machine just to use Plex on one.

This makes me so happy, you don't even know. I use a Raspberry Pi currently as my plex server, now I can use my Shield instead? Great time to be alive.

Someone on the thread about the 3.2 release on the Nvidia forums said he already received the beta 3.2.

I signed up for beta pre 3.0 and was part of it, I haven't seen anything prompting to install this version but hopefully I'll get it soon to see if it fixes the 5.1 audio issues with Netflix.

what would the passmark score be for comparing the shield to other devices?

I wish they would fix the actual Plex player before adding this. it does not auto switch framerates to match video properly, and stutters quite a bit. I spent a weekend of my life fighting this and tried SPMC instead, and it works as intended. Refresh rate switching, no judder, TrueHD passthrough, and you can stream an entire 30gb 1080P movie without multiple cache problems. I would much rather use Plex.
