So I can plug my portable hard drive into my shield TV. Use the Plex media server to watch my movies/TV shows through the shield TV but also stream the movies/TV shows to my shield tablet and my phone all at the same time? Will this be free or will I need a subscription? I've been using Kodi for my media but this seems like it might be a bit less complicated. If I'm getting right that is.
I used to use Plex but I've been using Emby for awhile now because it has tighter Kodi integration. But this... this is really tempting. I could finally turn off my PC.
I notice that they keep mentioning "pro." Is this indicating its only coming to the 500Gb model or will it be on the 16Gb model as well?
Will the Shield get a sleep- or server-mode so that it can power down the audio/video outputs but still be used as a server?
How many streams will it transcode? What is its passmark score?
I'm pretty psyched for this feature and everything /u/Andrroid confirms or adds gets me even more excited (thank you btw). If my set up goes as planned Plex may finally get a subscription out of me.
I've never actually tried Plex before (always had no interest in running a separate media server), but having read through all the comments on the Plex blog and both the Plex and NVIDIA announcements, I'm now excited about this!
Just a bit miffed they announced it 2 weeks before releasing the firmware update - I want it now! :)
Does anyone with Plex experience know if it'll let you play incomplete files (e.g. while they are downloading)? MX Player and VLC both let me do this, but it would be super cool to use Plex for everything!
Will a drive need to be plugged directly into the Shield or will i be able to set up PMS via a drive I have plugged into my router?
Will you be able to play back local media using the Plex app on the shield? So not streamed to any device rather played by the shield on its connected TV. Will this be able to replace media library apps like Archos and Kodi?
Initially I thought this was great news - that Plex Media Server would be available for Shield - but now it sounds like it will be built-in, not uninstallable, like the sort of crapware that the phone makers get paid to bundle.
Just because I want PMS doesn't mean all users should be forced to allocate resources to it on their machine!
Is there a good reason to use this vs. the Plex server on my QNAP NAS?
