DLNA and other questions about Nvidia Shield Android TV.

by chief_mojo_risin

Hello. I am just about to pull the trigger on buying the Nvidia Shield Android TV. I have a few questions that I am hoping you all can help me out here.

First off, how is the device overall? Do you think it is safe to buy one now? I mean, are there any rumours about a new/refresh device?

Is there any way to use PS4 Remote Play on it...without a side load?

Finally, can I use the device as a DLNA server? I would like to have an external USB hooked up, where I will have movies and my kid's shows on. Can I stream to other devices and Smart TV's on my home network?

Thank you in advance to all advice, suggestions and help.

Shield is 95% future proof (as a Streaming Device) on the hardware side with the upcoming HDR10 Update.

The only feature missing is Dolby Vision Support. However there are Dolby Licensing costs and there needs to be a seperate decoder for the Dolby Vision metadata. Both of those would increase the price significantly enough that I don't think this will be implemented in a future successor.

Unless HDMI 2.1 with dynamic metadata is released, I currently don't see a reason for Nvidia to release a successor.

"8k" (4320p) will take a long time to come to Home Theaters. TVs will be first (and quite possibly before 2020). But even the newest movies/tv series today are mostly shot in 4k-6k. Increased CGI costs, storage problems, diminishing returns in perceptable resolution etc. also make broad 8k footage and distribution unlikely.

Also we just got the new 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray Standard in 2016 which won't get a successor for ~10 years, just like DVD ( 1996 ) and Blu-ray ( 2006 ).

  1. It already supports 4K compared to the competition so that alone future proofs it for quite a while since it is mainly used for TV and movies instead of intensive tasks. I just got it last week and it seems great so far.
  2. Don't think so.
  3. There will be an update to the Plex app soon which will let it function as a media server with a DLNA option.

Not 100% sure on the DLNA server, but the next update (which should be out fairly soon) will let you run it as a Plex server.

It may not be a 1:1 ratio of simplicity as far as getting it set up, but it will offer you a vastly more complete experience compared to a DLNA server.
