Big Question:
Q: How many transcodes can SHIELD perform at the same time?
A: In general, a user can expect to be able to watch a 4K movie locally on SHIELD, transcode another movie to a mobile device (remote or at home), and Direct Play another movie to a 3rd device at home, all at the same time. This makes Plex Media Server on SHIELD a great mainstream server solution for a single family. As with all Plex Media Servers, performance will depend on your available network bandwidth and the bit-rate of the content that you are playing. Please note that while you can transcode at the same time as playing GeForce NOW games and most Android games, very graphics intensive games like Borderlands: TPS or Resident Evil 5 that require all of SHIELD’s available resources, will experience reduce frame rates when a transcode is being performed.
And current known issues to be fixed in next release:
If you enable the feature “Access SHIELD folders on a PC”, please note that it will not say on through a restart of SHIELD.
If you have adopted and SD card or USB drive as internal storage and are setting up new library folders using the Plex web app, the adopted storage will be incorrectly named “Null”.
Going in and out of the Plex app to the SHIELD home screen while content is playing can cause the Plex app to stop.
When SHIELD wakes from sleep while streaming a video, it can cause “Connection to server lost” message on Plex client app.
For anyone who seems to be missing the "Access SHIELD folders on PC" option. Here's how to fix it:
Apparently this feature relies on the latest version of Plex Media Server being installed on the Shield. You can see your version by going to System apps -> Plex Media Server. Mine was 0.9.17.1.238. This is an old version. To force update, go to https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb&hl=en and install to SHIELD. Once updated it should be now running v 0.9.17.1.256 (smb). Now go back to the Storage & Reset menu and you should see the option to to access shield folders on PC.
Til my my last years model TV has hdr. Wonder when I got that updated firmware.
Sony xbrx810. I thought only the xbrx850 and newer models got hdr builtin or thru updates.
Any knowledge on how to add/delete/move/rename files to an unmounted USB drive connected to the shield (maybe via PLEX?).
Dolby Atmos still isn't working on Plex. I figured the 3.2 update would finally fix that.
HDMI CEC doesn't seem to turn my projector off. It turns it on no problem when I press a button on the remote but when I set the Shield to sleep it doesn't turn off. I even turned it on in the options. Anyone else have this problem or am I doing something wrong?
I have weird issue with the new HDMI-CEC off feature. It works when I manually put my Shield to sleep but when my Shield goes to sleep automatically after 30 minutes, my TV stays on. Anyone else have this problem? Is there any solution or did they just forgot to add this feature?
Apparently there are problems with accessing shared folders on the Shield FROM the PC.
Not going to buy one until this is fixed.
Another important bit for information for 16GB users:
tl;dr transcode cache can make use of adoptable storage, metadata storage cannot
