I have last year's model. The only downside to the D in my opinion is the IPS panel but that's only if you aren't going to utilize the wide viewing angle. Android tv OS is awesome. And it's a great tv for the price.

Sony removed the 3D for this year's model.

Best 55 Inch TV - $1,000 to $1,500 from rtings.com

Last year's X850C is the #1 recommendation at this size and price point.

"The Sony XBR55X850C is a good choice if you want to futureproof yourself but don't want to necessarily spend a lot of money. It is not as good as the Samsung UN55KS8000 above, but it is also a few hundred dollars cheaper. Movies especially look good on it."

The X850D lineup seems to be a hair better overall but worse for Movies & TV, so note that.

Product Year Type Resolution Movies & TV Video Games Sports Overall
Sony XBR55X850D 2016 55" LED 4k 6.9 9.0 8.2 7.7
Sony XBR55X850C 2015 55" LED 4k 7.7 8.2 7.5 7.5

Full X850D review and conclusion:

"The Sony X850D offers good picture quality as long as it is watched in a room with some ambient light. Because of how well it handles motion, it will be a good pick for watching sports and playing video games. Its wide viewing angle will also ensure good picture quality for everyone in the living room. Unfortunately, those looking for good HDR implementation won't be fully satisfied with this TV."

Compared to last year's model:

"The previous year iteration, Sony X850C, is still better for watching the TV in the dark but doesn’t offer as good quality for sports, HDR and video games. Get the X850C only if you watch regular movies the most and don’t care about the picture quality when viewed from the side of the TV."

How expensive is one without android TV built in? Sometimes its cheaper to buy the box separate.

Be aware that the Android version is still 5.1.1.

Even on 2016 models there is the old Android Version.

I have a 2016 model and in the settings there are menus where the system is talking about a "Sony Bravia 2015 4K".

And even though Sony promised to deliver Android 6.0 for 2015 and 2016 models there is still no update.

Wait for it. Cause Sony does not get paid for updates and I'm beginning to think it's going to be worse. If you watch the logging on the TV with adb logcat it's a big mess. A lot of errors and stuff the TV is doing even on a fresh system.

Don't have this TV, but it says it's Sony 4K as opposed to just regular old 4K, so it must be good!
