Can Android TV devices play DVD/Blu-Ray?

by CuvisTheConqueror

Hi everyone!

Quick question I had -- I just ordered a Razer Forge box because of the sale they're having, and I'm wondering if I could use it to play DVDs or Blu-Ray discs. It does have USB on board, so I could attach an external drive; is there any software that can take advantage of that?

Please cancel your order. You will be disappointed terribly by the Forge.

Cancel it.

To answer your question, not that I am aware of. Even if it recognized the drive via USB you would still need an app that can play the disc.

There are some Samsung USB DVD drives that have a "media mode" or some name like that, that allows the drives to be plugged into some non-smart TVs and show up as a fat32 drive (or something like that). I have one and sure enough, Android reads it the same way. Doing that, you can watch a DVD in Kodi.

However, this is all very klunky. I only did it myself just to see if it would work. I'm not sure if I would recommend this, especially when you can just rip DVDs and BR to an HDD.

I don't believe Android has native drivers for DVD players so I don't think that will work. Consider ripping them and streaming through some dlna or NAS system.

Read the Best DVD to Android Converter reviews and try it to extract video from your DVD to playback on your Android TV.
