Nexus Player + 1TB Portable HDD?

by L3XCOM

I just got a Nexus Player, this device will cover all my streaming needs. I've also got a WD My Elements 1TB drive formatted to exfat that I have connected to my TV & that works fine.

However I would like to connect the HDD to my new Nexus Player with an OTG cable but will the Nexus Player be able to play my movies from my 1TB exfat HDD?

My plan was to do this & use MX Player to play my movies. It would be awesome to have all my streaming apps & HDD on one device.

Should work I do this with the shield. But for a much better interface use kodi, instead of mx player.

It should be able to do so.

Another option would be to run Plex Server on a computer, and hook all your media up there. Plex on android TV is fantastic.

Something to keep an eye on is the power requirements of your HDD. You may need a powered OTG hub.

There is also the Archos Video Player app. I used it with a NAS so I didn't have to keep my PC on that was serving as my Plex media server. Now the Shield does that job for me, so I have removed Archos. It was a great app though that I may eventually return to.

I can't confirm that a 1TB exfat drive will work with the Nexus Player but a 1TB drive formatted to fat32 will work fine. So try fat32 if exfat doesn't end up working out.

Thanks for the replies guys. Glad to hear it works on the Shield so hopefully it will on the Nexus Player too.

I've tried to connect my HDD to my Nexus 7 tablet running Android 6.0 via OTG & it powers the HDD but says the format is unsupported so that has me unsure. I should have my player on Monday so all I can do is try & see if it works I guess.

I plan on maybe getting a NAS drive down the line & using Plex but don't like the idea of having a PC on at the same time for it.

Thanks for all the info guys.

If my exfat HDD (fat32 won't do for me) connected to the NP directly doesn't work I think I'll get a NAS. With the NAS connected to my router will I need to use Kodi to access my movies from the NAS?

I'm not really a fan of Kodi from past experiences. MX Player is my favourite Android media player but I don't think MX Player will be able to play files directly from the NAS, I would need to use ES File Explorer to find the files then play them from there with MX Player?

I like to keep things as simple & clean as possible. And also as user friendly as possible for my other half.

I tried Plex before & really liked it. Loved the UI. But I don't want to need to use another device as a server. If I could have all my media on a NAS connected to my router & access that media with Plex on my NP it would be brilliant but as far as I know it can't be used this way.

As a user above said, I think ES Explorer + MX Player/VLC is the way I'll need do it.
