Sony TV with AndroidTV or nvidia shield?

by OttoNormalRedditor

Hi,

Would you recommend buying a Sony TV with integrated android TV or would you recommend buying a "dumb" TV and a nvidia shield?

What are the pros? What are the cons?

Is there any problems if I want to connect it (TV, shield or both) to a soundbar? What's the easiest way?

Thx!

Buy your TV based on picture quality. Period.

Why not both?

I know theres a stigma about "dumb" tvs vs smart tvs but honestly, 90% of tvs out there that are worth buying these days have some form of smart tech in them.

Some of the Sony TVs are actually quite good when it comes to their screens. And you can just ignore the smart functionality while using the shield. As a bonus, Sony Android TVs are the only Android TV devices that have access to Amazon video.

Regarding soundbars, I would strongly advocate against them. Get a cheap 5.1 audio receiver and 2 bookshelf speakers. Add speakers/sub as your budget allows. Head over to /r/hometheater for more info/details.

If you can get both, get both, if you have to pick one, probably pick a Shield TV and get a good regular TV.

Reason for Shield TV is because of the extra capabilities like gaming, special apps like Vudu 4k, and of course, it can be a full Plex Media Server.

Get a shield. My Sony android TV is shit. It's buggy, slower than my shield, turns itself on and off randomly and fucks with my soundbar.

My shield TV is damn near perfect.

Sony tv. Yeah, you can game on the shield, but it's nothing compared to the amount of games you can play on the Sony TV. Navigation is laggier on Sony, everything else seems to work fine honestly.

I have both. My sony tv is in the living room. And the shield is in my bedroom, attached to monitor.

Sony android tv is bot as powerful as the shield but it is powerful enough to stream everything i need. Kodi and plex also no problem.

Got 2015 Sony TV. It works as expected and Im relatively happy with it. There has been some bugs but they are getting crushed with monthly system updates. Software is still 5.1 so a little outa date but it does everything. I would buy again because there isn't an alternative to Android TV built in. Picture quality is incredible.

Don't get the Shield with a Sony TV. I have a Shield with a 55" X850D.

Because of this issue, I'm seriously considering a different TV or just returning the Shield. :/
