I know you can cast from the photos app on your phone. But how is it that there isn't an android tv google photos app still. Why doesn't google support their own platform?

That's what Google cast is for.
Or at least why does the backdrop feature on AndroidTV, not match the Backdrop features on Chromecast? You can configure them both using the Cast app on Android, except you can't select photos for the AndroidTV. THAT makes no sense...
It's not Google Photos but, I'm using the Photo Guru app( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cmpsoft.MediaBrowser ) on my Nexus Player until there is an official app.
Folder system isn't the best but, once you work it out, you can look at your photos from Google Photos (known in the app as Picasa) and Google Drive as well as some other sources.
So...missing a feature = not supporting the platform?
TIL
Instant upload means there is room for potentially private photos leaking to wider audience. Casting is done in a privacy-focused way.
I think it'd be cool. I sideloaded it to my Shield to auto-backup photos and videos. It definitely works well as a good alternative to Picasa support being removed.
Seriously. Just got my LeEco 4k HDR. Thought Google Photos would be a given app.
I can't imagine ever caring about seeing my photos on my TV, and I'm sure I'm not alone.
Because of the danger of an automatically backed up photo platform on a shared family device.
