Adopted as internal or just external?
I've heard people having success with Total Commander being able to write on external drives.
Of course, this means 'pulling' your file instead of 'pushing' it though..
The best way without root would be to set up a FTP server on your Shield. I haven't done it yet, but this guy has a tutorial that might work.
I updated Plex and was able to access the external hard drive connected to my Shield from my PC (Nvidia has this article: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4172/~/how-do-i-share-shield-folder-with-a-pc%3F ), however, the external drive is read-only on my PC. So close, yet so far. Anyone figured out how to write to the connected drive from the PC?
Did you go into storage settings and turn on the feature to have your storage visible on your network? When you turn it on you are asked to create a user name and password. Then at least on Windows you go to your network devices in file explorer and you should see your shield. Enter your login information and now you should see an internal and external folder.
This should work for external hard drives I assume. I only have my network storage showing up right now through it.
