Philips Android TVs any good?

by McStroyer

I'm thinking of buying a Philips 32PFS6401, priced £349.99 in Argos. I have a Bravia Android TV in my Living Room, but for the bedroom I have limited space and prefer not to bother with external boxes if I can help it. This appears to be the only 32" that runs Android TV.

There don't seem to be any reviews for this model. I'd be happy if the TV performs reasonably (the Bravia has terrible performance for most games), enough to run the PSP emulator with decent settings, for example.

It's a real shame these TVs aren't upgradeable in terms of CPU, GPU and memory. It would be amazing to just buy a new SoC every year or something.

I have had a mediocre experience with the Philips TV at my parents' place. Chromecasting worked only half of the time; I tried to upgrade their android and it failed with no error message, the UI for upgrades is poor, can't do background download for the upgrade and upgrade did not apply upon reboot. (Note: WiFi reception near the TV was bad)

Netflix worked like a charm, as well as Google Music and YouTube.

I had one once, returned after 3 days, got a AOC 58" dumb TV + Nexus Player, have never been happier

I own a Philips TV 2015 model 49PUK7100. It is a total garbage. I don't care about it's smart features because I have an Nvidia Shield, but the TV is not stable at all. Lots of random bugs which requires you to pull the plug and reset the TV. Stay away!

At this point in time, get a "Dumb" TV and get a Shield TV instead. You'll get the same experience, but the Shield is the definitive most powerful Android TV device out there.

In the past Philips have been the most restrictive of the Android TV manufacturers by not even allowing you to side-load apps. I could be wrong, but I believe that may be allowed now. Double check if this is important to you.

I would be careful relying on the smart features of a cheap TV. Generally speaking they are usually pretty poor performers and may not be compatible with many apps. So definitely attempt to try before you buy.

I wish I could find a TV that wasn't "smart" that meets all the other stats I'm looking for. For a TV I just want a 60" display, and I'll plug in my own internet connected device; however, I've never found anything that met the requirements of what I'm looking for.
