New user need advice

Hey everybody, so my old man loves watching movies. He doesn't care about live tv or even tv shows, just movies. Would the best thing for me to set him up would be to get an nvidia shield, and hook up popcorn time with it? He's already seen all the movies on netflix lol.

Any feedback and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks all!

We actually went the Roku route with my Mother-in-law. It's a little easier to set up.

In her house, I put a Zotac i5 computer in the basement running Plex, and have her account able to stream movies from my Plex account as well.

She has access to the usual (Netflix, Hulu...) as well as her local Plex content and my own. When she really wants to see a movie that isn't on the list, I simply acquire it (legally of course) and add it to my plex server.

On the plus side (versus Android TV), I can remote desktop into her Zotac box and troubleshoot both her home network and her content from afar, whereas with Android TV you're trying to walk someone else through it.

It's a little more work up front, but it's easier for her, and FAR easier for me. Remember --- you have to also factor in troubleshooting time when setting up for family members. You're going to be their IT Department.

Yes popcorn time works very well with shield. It has a separate app for Android tv.But keep in mind that popcorn time uses torrents. Besides that you also can install kodi or spmc for movies.

You could always go for more legal means:

  • HBO Now
  • Showtime
  • Starz
  • Crackle
  • Tubi TV
  • Sling TV with Hollywood Extra add on. This gives you Epix, Sundance and TCM
