Gaming, Nvidia Shield and iPhone

by newcaledoniancrow

Hey, I have been googling and looking at Youtube videos for a couple of days now trying to find a good solution to my needs and I have come up more confused than I started. Maybe you can help me? Basically this is my situation:

I haven't had a TV in years and just got a Roku integrated Sharp 1080p 32" deal. I'm liking it so far and it takes care of me for most of my casual entertainment needs. All except one; I'd like to start playing games again.

It's been years since I played games seriously but I'd like to play some casual indie games and occasionally a Fallout or Portal style RPG/Puzzle game. This is where things get tricky. I switched from Android to iPhone a year ago (for boring reasons) and so I figured maybe the new AppleTV would be a good way to go for a streamer/casual game box, but the selection of games there is truly awful. And the limitations on app size seems like it will keep decent games away from the platform for a while.

I was pretty impressed with the Nvidia shield and it looks like you can play some decent games on it (Borderlands, Half Life 2, Final Fantasy) but I have an iPhone and Macbook Pro and I am wondering if going across environments is going to be a huge pain in the ass.

Am I missing something? I feel like an old man confused by the world and shaking my fist at a cloud. Please help.

My Android tablet/phone and my girlfriends iphone/ipad don't really interact with my shield tv.

Really the biggest benefit of staying in ecosystem is paid apps/games. If thats not an issue for you, the shield won't be an issue for you.

I've read through this a few times and I'm not entirely sure what you're asking.

AppleTV has more stuff . Shield TV is the most powerful device in the class, and the most powerful Android device on the market.

Crossing environments isn't that big of a deal, to be honest. You download the app you want, you run the app. Some apps (e.g. youtube, Hulu, Netflix) you can control the Shield from your phone.

If you're wanting a lot of channels/apps, Apple will be better. But you already have a Roku, which is about the same. If you want to game, your only option at this point is the Shield TV.

Doesn't matter if you have a iphone and macbook, you can enjoy the Shield just as much as Android users. Go for it!

I can only think of 2 things I use my other devices to interact with the Shield.

  1. Install apps from web Play Store - you can do this from any browser on your Macbook

  2. Use the Android TV app on my phone to type passwords etc. - you can do this on the iphone, Google has an iOS app on the App Store
