I used VLC, but after an update, either of the TV or VLC, my content isn't showing in the folders on my DLNA server. The Movies app does show the content, but can't play mkv. I need an alternative.

Which router do you have? Several routers can actually run as a plex server. This would be much better than running as an SMB.
Achos video player with the codec pack. Plays everything plus dts audio. Works with dlna smb ftp. Has movie art remembers played past last left spot
