Difference between Netflix phone and TV app

by Slothinger

Hi,

Currently im trying to use my old android phone on my TV via MHL Cable as netflix player. Is there a way to get the same netflix interface as on an real android tv with the netflix app?

I tried the apks from here: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/netflix-inc/netflix-for-android-tv/ But after installing i get no icon and when i try to open the app directly (ES File Explorer Appmanager) nothing happens.

Is the app checking if its running on an "real TV"? mby then there is a way to spoof this...

Just buy a chromecast. They're super cheap and you can get the full Netflix experience by just casting from your phone. If wifi is a problem then you can use your device to create a mobile hotspot and use that network to cast

Netflix for TV uses a different intent for opening the app. On a phone, the home screen icon launches LAUNCHER activity. TV apps launch LEANBACK_LAUNCHER activity.

You'd need to use a launcher app that opens the app's Leanback activity since the Netflix TV app doesn't have a general Launcher activity.

That's not to say it will actually play videos, but at least you'll get into the app.

Download App Cloner from Google Play. It allows you to make an application that has an Android TV launcher work on your phone. It has other cool features, as well.

I don't know if this is the right sub to ask about this kind of thing, as we tend to focus more on actual Android TV devices. That said, you might try the version from this XDA thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/porting-netflix-android-tv-devices-t3025751/

@CuvisTheConqueror thx for this intersting link! i tried these apks, but they wont install on my HTC ONE M7. I think the android version (5.0.2) is the problem.

@collinjames yea i know the chromecast but i dont like how it works... Its only a temporary solution mby until i get something like this: http://www.futeko.com/products/MP067.php

Im wondering that almost nobody wants to use his old phone as an cheap smart tv upgrade...
