I've been interested in one for a while and was thinking about buying one sometime next month. On Amazon right now it looks like a lot of the combos are currently unavailable, and then I saw that a new remote and controller have passed the FCC, etc. Is there a new one coming out? Would it be dumb to get the current one right now?
Additionally, would you say the remote is worth it? 500gb size worth it?

I'm not buying a remote means a new unit. If a new unit does come out you would have to have ultra bleeding edge stuff to take advantage if it. Latest TV and audio tech. If you have equipment beyond what the current shield has sure wait. If you just have a 4k HDR TV and basic 5.1 or 7.1 surround get the one that's out now.
I don't think the new device will hit the same spot as the current shield tv does. It's still overpowered and does not need an update.
I expect a even beefier gaming device, although I am not sure how necessary that is.
I love my 500GB, don't even care if something newer was coming soon (got mine on sale anyway). I definitely needed the remote to be so excited about it.
no, go with the fire tv remote, and no go with a usb ssd or flash.
edit: unless you want voice commands, in that case the remote could be worth it.

I picked one up from best buy 2 weeks ago, and the 16 GB model included the remote.
I thought I remember hearing that Nvidia halted future Shield TV replacements to focus in cooperation with Nintendo and the NX? I have feeling that Nvidia is sputtering out focus on the Shield line. They canceled new tablets too. I'd hold out until Black Friday if you can.

The remote is worth it. Personally, I bought the 16gb model and attached a hard drive. I found this to be more cost effective than the 500gb.
