Which HDHomeRun should I get for DVR in Nougat?

by dasdagoodone

I'm looking to pick up an HDHomeRun tuner to use with the Live Channels app on my Nexus Player for both live and recorded TV.

The question is, is it worth it to spend the extra money and get the HDHomeRun Extend since it has the built in decoder or will my Nexus Player be able to handle the load from the HDHomeRun Connect (no decoder)?

For what it's worth, my Nexus Player is connected to the network over Ethernet and the USB to Ethernet adapter has a USB hub as well, so I could plug external storage to it. Worst case, I could save up for a Shield.

EDIT: As pointed out by /u/bluezp, Android Nougat does not support DVR by itself. This was what certain articles made it out to be but is not actually the case. I found this post written by a SiliconDust employee link here which pretty much echoes that thought.

Andrroid

Nexus player can handle the raw stream as of Android 6.0. As long as the NP has a strong network connection (raw OTA is like 10-15 mbps), the connect will be fine.

Like the OP, I'm looking to marry OTA DVR with Android TV. I've yet to buy a box, so I'm considering both the upcoming Mi Box as well as the 2nd-gen Nvidia Shield TV. There are a lot of unanswered questions about what our options might be. One of the head Android TV guys at Google said that they would include open-source drivers within the next version of the Live Channels app to support two different USB OTA tuners. It wasn't clear to me, though, whether that tuner support was simply in the beta software so that developers could easily feed live TV content into the Live Channels app for their own development purposes, or if those tuners will be supported in the final next update to Live Channels. And if those tuners are supported, can they be used as part of a DVR solution? If so, who would provide the software (recording engine) to make that happen? Is Google cooking up something natively? Are they working with an outside developer to ensure a solution comes to market?

You do realize that nougat does not itself turn any Android TV box into a full blown DVR right?

Silcon Dust is working on (available as preview for $60) a DVR server that can run on Android (or a NAS or other OSes) but is only officially supported on Shield TV for running the RECORD engine (the VIEW app works fine with recordings on tons of other devices).
