Android TV Nougat Settings UI: a step backwards?

by proxicent

Am I the only one that finds the changes to the settings UI for Nougat really jarring? It now crams everything into a narrow sidebar, replacing large icons and a combination of horizontal and vertical scrolling with small icons & text and only vertical scrolling.

Everything is more difficult to read, and seems to run against the leanback design elsewhere in the UI. It's especially obvious in the now much smaller and more difficult to navigate apps list. There are odd inconsistencies too - e.g. contrast the design and layout of a connected vs not connected network page. Seems unfinished.

I don't really understand what Google's aiming for with these changes. I might feel differently if the settings could be reached from anywhere rather than just from the Home screen, then it might make sense.

I think it's supposed to allow you to open settings on top of your playing content. You can open Live Channels, go home, then go to settings. It's more consistent with the Leanback library.

Agreed, it's awful, I honestly think it was supposed to be replaced by the Android TV equivalent, but Google forgot to swap it out in the build process.

Perhaps it's for a feature we'll see on new Android TV devices, like a settings button on the remote that allows you to access settings at any time?

The old menu didn't really feel like Android, but the new one is awful.

And here is my 850c, which was supposed to get marshmallow, still on lollipop.

Since I use the Shield TV, can you provide (or link) a screenshot showing the changes?

I got used to it pretty quickly during the beta period. Don't even remember the old interface.
