Native DVR support is coming to Plex

This is big. Let's hope that the reason Plex DVR isn't yet included in Plex Media Server for Shield TV is because they're working to make it interface with the DVR UI hooks built into Android TV 7.0 and the upcoming version of the Live Channels app. Recorded shows could either be viewed in the Plex app or in the Live Channels app, although the latter would also allow for live TV viewing and a traditional grid-style program guide. And all TV listings and recorded shows would funnel through Live Channels into Android TV's universal search and recommendations features.

Well...not so much coming as already here. Definitely still a beta, limited to Plex Pass users, no live tv [currently] and recording management is limited to the web UI (no apps support it yet). Oh and the dvr functionality has not been pushed to the shield plex server yet.

Regardless, huge news. I'm excited for the future of Plex.

Of course, it only supports the latest/greatest new tuners. It seems like anyone in the business of making OTA tuner software is conspiring to force me to buy a new tuner when my existing hardware suites me just fine... except InstaTV. They still support the older tuners. <end rant>

"This is an artisanal piece of goodness" that lacks live TV pausing. They don't even say coming soon only that they're interested in it. But hey there's a 12:00 blinking easter egg in it somewhere.

The writer of this blog post must have gotten a note from the editor saying "punch up every single god damn sentence". It's really obnoxious.

For those folks hoping that Plex DVR will eventually support encrypted cable channels, I wouldn't hold your breath. Meeting CableLabs' requirements for decryption with CableCARD is apparently very difficult and I expect the necessary development time and licensing fees just wouldn't make it worthwhile for Plex to tackle. (And for those relatively few cable subscribers who want to own a retail DVR that works great with their pay TV, there's already TiVo.) That's why they're really pushing this as an OTA thing. That said, it will work with the Silicon Dust Prime CableCARD tuner, it just won't record/play stuff on encrypted channels. Depending on your cableco, maybe only premium channels (Showtime, HBO, etc.) are encrypted, maybe everything but the local broadcast channels are encrypted, or maybe everything is.

Keep in mind that this is only for unencrypted channels, so HBO and the like can't be DVR'd.
