I am currently using a mycloud 2.0 with the Shield. The transfer speeds aren't that great (using WiFi). Is anyone using an external HDD with the Shield? What is the performance like?

I've got a pretty similar setup (4TB mycloud & 1TB external), transfer speeds are significantly better but the drive doesn't always connect. Transfers to the NAS are painfully slow but WD Sync means I transfer files to (and from) the drive from anywhere in the background. I just kinda drop whatever into a folder and let it sync.
My NAS works fine for any film up to ~20GB, I get buffering issues for anything above that. USB 3.0 can handle pretty much anything. Both devices support gigabit ethernet which might help.
I have flawless performance using a drive attached to my router (essentially a NAS) but only since upgrading my router to one with modern specs. (Linksys WRT1200ac) My USB connection is USB3, all wired connections are gigabit, and all wifi connections are 802.11ac. No more bottlenecks. Also, codecs matter. Mpeg2 is bad with packet loss, so if your streaming Blu-ray ISOs you might consider re-encoding your library to MKVs/MP4s or something.
I'll never go hard drive until there's a sabnzbd build for android. No way I would want to unplug it everytime I wanted to copy over a file.
Make sure at least one of the two devices (preferably the server) are attached to the router via ethernet.
With a wired network connection on the drive, transfer speed should be more than adequate for any sort of media playback. And the media files will automatically be available to all devices on your network.
Wifi is probably a pretty big bottleneck. Have you plugged both devices into ethernet to see what the difference is?
