Sony Bravia Android TV or Regular 4K with Nvidia Shield...

by gaijinboricua

I am currently checking new TVs and considering buying a Sony Bravia Android TV or any other 4K TV brand and had the Nvidia Shield to it. My major concern is how complex the system would get, cost, and Kodi performance with HEVC files.

What is everyone's opinion?

I'd go for the best display you can find regardless of what featureset is behind it, and if it is not an android tv add an nvidia shield.

I chose the Sony X850 as it was the cheapest HDR 4K display with a sort-of-acceptable input lag and a really good panel. I don't know what /u/aujla is talking about though, I do not have any stutters or freezes. Maybe (s)he has a different model though?

But anyway, the inclusion of android tv was none of my concerns. If the aforementioned features were on any other TV without android, so be it. Maybe I would even prefer it as it opens up the ability to use a custom made ambilight thing.

Firstly, always buy TVs based on picture quality. Don't buy a TV for its smart features. They become outdated rather quick. Just look at TVs from 3 years ago... look at their UI and performance... you want your TV to last longer than 3 years, right? No reason to deal with years of sub-par picture quality after the smart features are obsolete. Upgrade your connected devices to a stellar display!

  • Complexity? You plug the Shield into the TV. Done.
  • Cost? Could be more, could be less. Depends on what TV you pair with the Shield. All total you could save money, but might spend more.
  • Performance? Get the Shield. X1 chip was ahead of its time a year ago, and it still blows away any Android TV device since, TV or box, and will even beat out the upcoming Xiaomi box. The Shield is the most powerful streaming box on the market.

I have a 2015 Sony Android TV. It freezes, video stutters sometimes, the TV tuner is not fully integrated into the Android OS. Also, Sony are absolutely rubbsh with updates. Still waiting for Marshmallow.

I also have a Shield for my other TV and it is flawless. Go for the Shield.

Performance of the Shield should be much better. I recommend going with the TV you like, then add the Shield.

I have a Sony Android TV and one thing you have to consider is that with the Sony Android TV, you only have one remote. No need to switch inputs, etc. versus using one remote to turn on the tv and one to navigate and back to the other remote to adjust volume.

Sony TV is more wife friendly.

I will also suggest a TV and a Shield

Personally I would never buy a TV with Android TV installed

I have both.

It's the only way to go if you play using Gamestream, for instance.

Got the Sony 750d ... Love it

My recommendation is Visio P-Series + NVidia shield. Absolutely the best non-oled display you can get and cheaper than the competition.

I just bought a Shield to compensate for the terrible, horrible, miserable, completely unusable, bug-riddled POS ATV implementation on the new, Philips-branded 3000€ shitstain on my living room wall (do not buy a Philips ATV). The Shield is working great, everything as expected and really fast.

I am in the market for a new TV, currently have the Nvidia Shield TV, but looking towards Sony and Android TV for Dolby Vision support in Netflix. The way I see it now if would be using Nvidia Shield it would break the Dolby Vision chain and I assume revert to HDR10.

Both. Haha
