Updating AndroidTV Sony

by i_need_closure

I'm still waiting for Marshmallow on my XBR-65x810c and I've pretty much given up being that 7.0 is out and sony is two years behind. Has anyone ever heard or had success with hacking one of these TVs to run a newer version of Android? Thanks in advance!

Sony tech support told me two weeks ago that Marshmallow is coming to at least the 2015 models in "September".

I didn't ask him, he just volounteerd that was the next update to fix the Sky Q stutter issue.

It just beggars belief that Google is yet again allowing OEMs to ruin the prospects of Android on TV by falling so far behind on updates. What Android TV really needs right now is significant consumer and dev trust in its future as a well-supported platform on actual TVs rather than external boxes (of which only one over-priced and over-specced model is currently for sale in any market).

This feet-dragging is the last thing Google needs, and I can't understand why they aren't seriously banging heads together to make the partnerships work as they should, growing the garden for everyone equally. Have they lost interest in a pet project yet again? It doesn't help that they no longer even sell their own box. Google's flip-floppery and ADD tendencies really enrages me sometimes.

Submitted a request to Sony PR this afternoon querying what is happening with software updates for past, present and future Sony Bravia Android TVs. We'll see if they give a meaningful answer.

What do we do with the TV's when the latest Android version is no longer supported and apps stop working? Junk them?

Great News! About Sky Q UHD viewing being fixed by marshmallow update, /u/fidgetwith does you still have the transcript.
