Purchased a used Shield TV

by TakingOnWater

Hey guys,

I've been wanting a Shield TV for some time, but right when I had a good change to purchase one, they'd been out of stock forever. But one popped up on Amazon Warehouse Deals for a nice price so I took the plunge. It's hard to tell if it's really in good shape or how used it was, so I know it's kind of a gamble...worst case scenario I could return it I suppose.

But supposing the device is in good physical condition and it works normally, does anyone suggest any precautions I might take before turning on a used device and connecting it to my network? I haven't used an Android TV before, but am familiar with the OS in general from my phones/tablets and such. Could I just power the device, and immediately wipe it or something?

Thanks everyone! Excited to get it in the mail!

Just do a factory reset upon initial start.

Congrats on purchasing in my opinion, the one device that I've never regretted buying.

I bought my Shield TV as a Amazon Warehouse deal as well. I have had it for about 6 months and so far so good. No trouble. It didn't really look like it had been used at all. All I did was a factory reset. Worst case scenario, return it and mark the reason as not as described for free return shipping. Buy a new one when the next console is released.

I love mine. Surprisingly so does my fiancé. The built in cast API is an underrated feature. I cast to mine all the time and it will actually switch my TVs inputs and start playing what I cast. So useful when you stumble upon a funny YouTube vid or something.

Factory reset should be enough. To be super sure, you're going to have to pull down a factory/recovery image and flash it. There's a very very very slim possibility that they injected something into the ROM or the recovery partition, so if you want to be sure you'll have to just wipe them with stock images.

Are you sure it's actually used? I get a lot of the stuff on Amazon Warehouse Deals where it's just a damaged box. They list them as "used" so you know not to expect a mint package, but usually the description says exactly why it's on Warehouse Deals.

Just something to consider...

Can I ask how much you got it before? I'm stuck between buying one cheaper now, or waiting for a new model. One has been rumored soon...
