Mi Box Discussion Thread

by RedTib

Because the Mi Box is in the wild, I wanted to start a thread to discuss it. I have one, and I'll be checking this thread if anyone has particular questions.

One thing I've noticed is that the power cable is unreasonably short. Like 3 foot or so. I've never seen such a short power cable for a media streamer.

I wonder if $69 is the ACTUAL price or if it's a mistake. I already have a SHIELD, but buying them @ $69 if they actually cost $100...

nolookjones

how is kodi running on it?

getcashmoney

Can anyone test if you can control this with a Harmony smart/home control or harmony elite?

mlcarson

Just purchased some Nvidia Shields at $160 ea. Think I should have waited a week and got these at $69 ea now.

  1. Does it work with USB Ethernet adapter?

  2. Does it work with an USB TV tuner?

If both is true this is my dream coming true for 70$. (And it has to come to Europe)

burner46

Does the Prime Video apk work?

f30R

Thinking of selling my shield an acquiring one of these instead. Hopefully it will be available in Norway.

Aside from it's bundled offers and the advantage of not having to order it from China, what are the advantages of this box over the various other android Tv boxes you can pick up at half the price - http://www.gearbest.com/android-tv-box-_gear/

TheRealSilverBlade

Anyone know if this will come to Canada?

AZImmortal

Can anyone comment on the Mi Box's ability to play mpeg 2?

FoferJ

Does the Mi Box have an INFARED receiver, so older/cheaper universal remotes can control it?

I know it supports HDMI-CEC, the Bluetooth remote, and smartphone apps. I'm wondering about good old fashioned IR. Looks like the answer is "no" but looking for definitive confirmation.

JumboMcNasty

Can I use the Ps3 or 4 or 360 controller with this? I really want to play some old emulators on this thing.

Linkinjunior

I know nothing about this box. Can you setup a Plex server on it?

zires

What are the specs?

achaw

How about gaming guys, in the new mi box?

Dinierto
  1. Does it have a microsd card slot?

  2. How is emulation, specifically N64 and PSX?

  3. Can you pair 3rd party Bluetooth controllers to this for emulators?

TheRealSilverBlade

Can someone test with with a Harmony remote (NON-smart hub version) ?

osho741

This was probably asked but how is voice search? Does it work well?

TheRealSilverBlade

How granular is the voice search?

does it always do a universal search, or can you search within a specific app (like say Netflix)?

Can it do Voice to text, to eliminate the need for a keyboard?

Jstothy

Cannot wait for online availability at this price!

claptrap925

Will reicast (dreamcast emulator) work on the mi box? I ask because it wouldn't on the nexus player.

smoothturbo

anyone know the real release date?

jclendineng

I tried to buy one but the sale was rejected here in Ohio. Anyone else have better luck?

Can anyone tell me wich is exactly model of the mediatek chip included on the mi box?

I went into my Wal Mart in San Antonio last night the 27th and the night before returning a Roku 4 which is the ultiimate piece of shit. The MiBox units 6 of them were stocked right next tot the Roku's. But, when i went to exchange it gave me the same message both nights in a row. Not able to sell or not available. It showed the price on their machine as $69 but still i guess the Chinese are holding up the sales. WTF would Wal Mart stock the product and leave it collecting dust on the back shelf that they have already paid for. Knowing WM they usually sell shit when they get it off the truck, this is a new one for me. I always liked the fact that they would find a way to get you what you wanted expecially if you had been up to their store 4 nights in a row. More corporate bullshit not releasing a product for sale. WTF could possibly be the reason they aren't letting Wal Mart sell it when online sites are already selling them.???

Damn, I just pulled the trigger on a HiMedia Q5 Pro thinking it was one of the best Android TV 4k players. Hmmmm.

elitegoodguy

HDHomeRun performance? I currently have a Sony Android TV and the video stutters in both the HDHomeRun app and Live Channels.

Was told it'll be fixed in the next Sony update.

Was hoping to pick up 2 of these for the rest of the TVs in the house.

Does playing HEVC/x265 work as good as expected?

Deinterlacing/playback of 1080i?

Anyone know when the mi store will get their second wave of stock?

iChopPryde

Anyone willing to go to Walmart and send one to me in Canada? Please pm me.

Due to the video playback issues on Plex and HBO Go, I'm switching back to the Nexus Player for now. Does anyone know how to put the Mi Box remote into bluetooth pairing mode? I'd like to use it on my Nexus Player because that remote sucks!

AndroidicusMaximus

What about adoptive storage AND Ethernet adapter/usb hub? Anyone else worried about 8GB storage? Can you even use a hub for adoptive storage, along with keyboard, game pads, etc... ?

Picked one up tonight with 2 years of coverage for $81.00 OTD. Works great, VLC is clutch on it for local content. PlayOn isn't available (Yet?), tho is 'visible' via UPnP, but doesn't function thru VLC as of yet.. messaged them about it. Correction: it works fine via SPMC/Kodi. Plex is available for those who use it. As well as SPMC/Kodi, as I'm sure everyone here already knows. Thinking of checking it out myself. I never had a need to mess with it before now. Kind of bummed the update that was there didn't happen out of the box.. it brought back all the apps I deleted & also took away the ability to delete them again! My only complaint, thus far. (CORRECTION: After the update, just now discovered if you install then uninstall any annoying 'recommended' apps, they will indeed delete after the Out of the box update. (except for VLC?) Enjoy!

I would love to pick this up, is there any solution to getting a Roku/Nvidia style remote for private listening, maybe an adapter or third party remote?

Maxpo

I paired a bluetooth headset last night. Today, the tv did not output sound. I turned on the headset and could receive audio. I turned the headset off and unpaired it. I turned the Mi Box off and on but still no audio from the tv. Anyone encounter this? Edit: found it. Settings>Sounds> Digital Sounds is set to auto detect. I guess it didn't. Manually changed to HDMI. Now I have sound through tv speakers.

I want to be able to hook up my 2tb usb hdd drive with my digitised blu-ray collection. VLC couldn't find my mac share so I used Plex which does work but my network isn't fast enough (Wi-Fi in bad area of my house with no LAN available) for it to work properly. My old mac mini has trouble transcoding it at a lower rate too so it's a bit of a no go sadly (it looks great though!). Really I just want to plug it in but I've read that you can't have a drive over 32gb in it which is too small for a blu-ray mkv - I do hope there's an update or people here know something I don't.

JesperBerg

Has anyone used a different remote than the one that came with? We love the box, and it's perfect for what we need. But my girl lost the remote and I hate using an app based one off my phone or tablet. Hopefully something under $30. Any suggestions?

mattharding130

I just purchased a Xiaomi Mi Box with Android TV. The apartment building I live in has the type of wifi like hotels have, where you have to sign in, or register each device. There's no way to do this on the Mi box, so I need the MAC address to register the device. I thought I would find it in the "about" section in settings but it's nowhere to be found. Any tips on how to find the MAC address?

JesperBerg

We love the Mi. Lost the remote last weekend and had no idea what to replace it with it with. We ended up getting this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00U78EKM4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Pretty happy so far. The mouse thing is taking a little getting used to because I've never dealt with one like this before. But it seems to do what we're wanting it to. Will report back in a couple of weeks to see if we're still happy with it.
