Can I install AndroidTV Leanback Launcher on a cheap Chinese Android box to replace stock launcher?

by alero5752

Example boxes would include G-Box Q2, Minix Neo U1, M8S Pro, etc. I'm basically trying to weigh my options in comparing these models to the new Xiaomi Mi Box. A Youtuber compared the new Mi box to the internals of cheaper Chinese $35 counterparts. However, I'm looking to always use the Leanback launcher only. I'm not a fan of the other crappy launchers.

You can try. APKMirror has the Leanback Launcher APKs , so you can download them and go to town. However, even if you get it to install, you might still have problems with apps not showing up in Leanback or launching into tablet mode. If I were you, I'd just go with the MiBox; less headaches that way.

I don't believe so since although Android TV is based on Android, Google has decided to keep some Android TV code proprietary. That being said, I highly doubt its possible, but you could try installing HAL Launcher.

And what version of Android (touchscreen Android even) are you finding on these cheap Chinese boxes?

I suppose they don't need to hide any malware on the system if they never update the OS to patch security holes.
