I own a Mi Box, what do you want me to check or test?

by dontgetaddicted

I was one of the few able to purchase a MiBox on Saturday Morning before Walmart shut it down. I keep seeing a lot of questions floating around and figured I would start a thread to see what I can answer for you.

Currently, I am able to confirm the the Android PS Vue app does work with a mouse and using ChainFires SideLoad Launcher to open it. It runs and streams, but the quality seems really low. 720 or maybe even 480.

My son has been playing RipTide and another driving game, and they both run very well. Casting to the device is quick and easy just like a Chromecast - it can get annoying if someone decides to cast something to it while you are watching a show or playing a game. I see fights getting started over this.

I only have a 1080p TV, but I streamed Pluto TV's 4K World channel and it's remarkably more clear and crisp than 1080 content (Maybe placebo)

I won't be able to do anything until I get home from work in another 4 hours or so, but post a question or test and I'll see if I can provide an answer when I get home.

Edit: A note on the CBS Sports app, the Android TV App doesn't show live game content (on Saturday UT vs FL) just highlights and pregame clips. So I had to cast the game from my phone to the MiBox. Wtf is that about? If that's a content distribution thing, it's stupid, it ended up on the Mi Box regardless.

Edit 2: I also plan on purchasing this to see if I can get Ethernet over USB to work if anyone has any reviews on that product or wants to say "Hell no it wont work" before I spend $30 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014ZOJX7W/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A294P4X9EWVXLJ

Nah, not placebo, it should be more clear. That channel streams at a very high bit rate, higher than most streams, so even at 1080p, you will notice a difference.

Have you tried Kodi, and if so how is it's performance? Especially while using heavier add-ons such as PseudoTV Live?

GarageBattle

HDMI-CEC functionality.

IE - can you wake your TV with the Mi Box remote (when you wake the Mi Box), and puts the TV to sleep when you sleep the Mi Box.

The main reason I returned my Nvidia shield was poor HDMI-CEC compatibility. My 4th gen Apple TV does this perfectly - the only remote I need is the ATV remote.

Obviously not all TVs do HDMI-CEC the same, so i understand that ymmv.

Root?

goforyfy

can you connect external hard drive to it and play local videos on tv?

Don't spend $30. You can get the same thing without the Anker branding for $20 I use that one with my Nexus player, works great. I bought this one about a year ago, there are cheaper ones now.

Deathalo

Can you load Amazon Prime video, and does it work? Specifically does it output 4K HDR?

RockItGuyDC

Any chance you have a Harmony Hub? I'd like to see how responsive the Mi Box is through that.

CuvisTheConqueror

If you have a PC with an Nvidia graphics card, I'd love if you could try out Moonlight game streaming.

Sgt-JimmyRustles

The USB Ethernet is supposed to work from what I read on the manual.

serpentxx

So the manual shows a xiaomi usb-ethernet adapter, they have been around for a while now and im curious if it would work.

2 part question, do you have a USB camera you can try plugging in to the box? And does the play store have Skype?

nolij420

I'd like to find a bluetooth remote that kind of mimics the functionality of a PS3 media remote (which I wasn't able to get to work with the Mi Box). I just ordered a SMK-Link Blu-Link VP3700 and I'm hoping it works. Anyone have any luck in this department?

goforyfy

can Mi box create WiFi hotspot to stream files from external hard drive to phone/tab?

ronakg

How is the mic on the remote? Nexus player's mic is shit.

For comparison, use the Android TV remote app on your phone. Phone mic is usually really good.

TheRealSilverBlade

Can you test HD Netflix with 5.1 surround sound (on titles which have it?)

achaw

Can you run antutu benchmark and post the results?

go_green_machine

Do you have any VC-1 files you can test? Some of the Blurays ripped to my NAS are in VC-1, and my Shields play them without issue. I'm interested in a Mi Box for a 3rd television in the house, but if it doesn't do VC-1, I'll grab another Shield.

Fera6037

I'm also curious as to what sound codecs this supports. I have 5.1 so when I get HD content a lot of times its in DTS, DD, or some other audio codec with 6 channels. I saw that you dont have 5.1 setup but if you could test any variety of 5.1 audio files that would be great!

edit: the Mi Box website actually has DTS and Dolby Digital as a feature if you scroll down on the main page!

Any Experience on how this handles cable apps? I currently use the Fios app to stream channels, but have to cast my entire phone screen to the TV and leave my phone on. I would like to know if the Fios app is available or blocked.

  1. How many bluetooth devices can i connect at once? i have a bluetooth speaker, mouse-keyboard and gamepad.
  2. Given that the device has only one USB port, can i use a USB hub and add additional devices? (ethernet, Hard drive etc)
  3. Does it have google play store?

thanks for what you are doing

If someone with the new Mi Box can extract the Vudu apk and post it somewhere then we can try it on Amazon Fire TV to see if it will work.

Mincc

I was wondering if apps like Terrarium TV work. As far as I know you can't navigate and select anything in Showbox using Android TV.

bentripin

do you get stereo out the 3.5mm audio out when surround sound is being outputted via HDMI?

I ask because my Zone2/Zone3 wont take digital audio inputs and I need to have both outputting at same time to my AVR.. My Nexus Player wont play Pandora on my outdoor speakers because of no analouge audio output, was hoping this would take care of that.

Hey were you able to get any of the amzon video APKs working?

AndroidicusMaximus

What about adoptive storage AND Ethernet adapter/usb hub? Anyone else worried about 8GB storage? Can you even use a hub for adoptive storage, along with keyboard, game pads, etc... ?

Hello guys and I apologize in advanced if my question has already been answered previously. I'm new here so im Still trying to get used to the site. I just purchased a mi box last night and immediately tried sideloading the xfinity tv app. I installed 3 different ones I believe they were version 3.9 and 3.8 and those did t work. After i stall I try to open the app and it gives me an error saying it can't open the app . So I tried an older version of the xfinity tv app I believe it's 3.3 and that did open but when going through the initial set up it gives me another error saying that "there's no app that can open this" or something close to that im not at home so im not 100% on the wording but has anyone had this happen before?

NemoKozeba

Does it have a camera? Or can a usb camera be used for skype/hangouts?

AgentZeroGA

If I am understanding the concept of mi box correctly it should work with streaming apps as long as its available on the google play store? If so can you test WatchESPN and NBC Sports extra?

PfunkTypeR

Good read. Can this start-up in Kiosk or Desktop mode? Is there a way to install or launch Hangouts?

FoferJ

I would be really surprised if that USB to Ethernet adapter actually worked. It's more than just hardware, you'd also need drivers for it to work. Hopefully the specifics (of which adapters do work) will be shared soon.
