Nexus Player x265

by dub_starr

I am intrigued with the x265 HEVC codec for re-encoding my personal videos, since i have read it can keep the same quality at a lower size file. I have been messing around with Handbrake on some files, and the output file size is great, however the playback, in kodi, is blocky, especially in fast moving scenes, fire and smoke effects and even scenes with just a solid color background.

I am absolutely open to the idea that i am encoding with bad settings, but i was wondering if it was more likely the codec and the handbraking fault, or is it the Nexus Player's hardware that may be causing the blocking.

If it is in fact the hardware, would it make sense to still begin to re-encode, since future hardware will be albe to handle it, or should i wait until the new hardware is out so i can test settings etc?

Hardware Get Xiaomi mi tv for x265 support

It's the hardware Nexus players can't play x265. You should get a Mi Box as stated it plays x265

I think the general consensus at the moment is that while h.265 is the better codec, x264 -- the encoder for h.264 -- is far more mature and delivers better results. Only reason to use h.265 right now is if you really want to compress your files, because at very low bit rates h.265 significantly outperforms h.264. If you are not in direct need of space, I would hold off re-encoding my stuff just yet.

Apart from this the Nexus Player does not have hardware support for h.265, which is why the playback sucks. Most current machines have hardware support implemented, e.g. the Shield Android TV.

Kodi on NP handles x265 much better with the ffmpeg software decoder, try it by disabling both acceleration options in settings, that will get rid of the blockiness. Still not going to be great, but at least watchable.

Mi box will be better

MiBox for x265. Though, if you're going for broke, get the Shield TV. I think it will do hardware transcoding for h.265 using the built in plex-media-server.

You trade off file size for more cpu processing power to decode the video.

There are many reasons to lead x265 playback issue on Kodi. And waht kodi verison are you using? Only Kodi 14 and higher version supports to play x265 video.

What's more, if you want to play x265 video, you should make sure your TV and Box support h.265. http://www.love-media-player.com/play-h265-on-kodi/

Your encoding settings are crap. Try it again with a high bitrate and you will see that it looks and plays fine. Stop trying to create tiny encodes like some torrent uploader from India.
