4K H.265 videos in Plex play smoothly in direct play on Mi Box...on a Full HD TV

by JBMacGill

Most of my 4k HEVC H.265 videos play fine in direct play mode in Plex, as long as they are 30 FPS. Some of the 4k videos I have in this format have decryption errors with green tiles and 60 FPS videos transcode.

Most 4k H.265 videos I have don't have problems with decryption and are 30 FPS and they all play very smoothly with no dropped frames BUT I am only running the Mi Box on a 1080p display. That might have something to do with it.

Plex shows direct play is happening and that the resolution is UHD.

Not trying to be a smartass but why bother with 4k videos on a 1080p display?

Mi box is absolutely fantastic. I do enjoy it a lot.

Honestly, I've heard that the mibox is kinda underpowered in regards to playing 4k video in comparison to the Shield TV. They did Kodi tests and there was noticeable frame drops and lag with the 4k videos on the mibox vs the Shield.

I've tried 720 to test, no issues.

Where do you get 4k 60fps videos?

Are you hooking directly to your TV?
What 1080p TV do you use?
If you're switching hdmi through a receiver, which receiver?
Have you tried both direct and through a receiver?
Thanks...
