Mi Box - What Resolution Is Everyone Running In On 4K TV

by OutlawPro

I just picked this up Friday afternoon as soon as Walmart lifted the no sale flag. This is my first Android TV box so I'm getting used to how it works. Under Settings -> Video the default resolution is 1080p. When I tried out the auto setting, it wanted to use 720p so I quickly turned that off. Right now I have it set to 4K-smpte. I have a Samsung 4K TV but don't really know what the best setting should be. Any suggestions on how to tell?

Does it always run in 4k60hz, because I thought the Fire TV was quite smart that it runs at 1080p and only switch to 4K when 4K content is playing. Which allows the TV to upscale 1080p content natively.

I have mine set to 4k60hz

so, if you set it to 4K-smpte, will it run apps in 4K?

AFAIK, SMPTE is some sort of different method of delivering data to your TV. My Mi Box lags with the option on. I use 4k60hz.

I don't know, maby it's just me. If you can afford a 4k TV, isn't it worth it to spring for the roughly 100$ more shield TV?

I am running mine with a 1080p Vizio 32". Since the update, the box wants to choose 480p for some reason (to be fair, the Vizio TV i have was one of the first 32" TVs that Vizio made) and I had to manually override it. Prior to the update, things actually worked great. Some things to check: Make sure your TV supports the specific mode you want it to...this also comes down to checking the spec for the version of the HDMI that your TV has. Older 4K TVs could NOT do 4K60. If your box is set to 4K60 and your TV isn't compliant, you will get unpredictable behavior. Also, remember, that HDCP is a factor as well. Just because you have a 4K TV doesn't mean that netflix will play back 4K content for supported TV for quite a bit of 4K content. Any set purchased prior to 2013 will likely be SOL. Even sets purchased during 2013-2014 might have issues.

On my samsung "auto change to best resolution" or whatever it's called switches it to 720p60. My tv supports 4k at 60fps though. It looks fine when i use this setting but it seems like it would be best to only switch to 4k when showing 4k content.

And as far as i know, smpte is 24 fps which looks choppy but it gives movies a theatre look. Someone please correct if i'm wrong. I don't like the theatre look.

Mine keeps defaulting to 480p when I turn my TV on and off. Then I have to go into the settings and put it back k to 4k60hz. Any one else experiencing this?

Can anyone who owns the Mi Box tell me, if you can set the resolution to 480i on this thing?

I wanna get one for my CRT TV to watch my old movies in their former 4:3 glory, but also have the option to use Netflix, since there are also some older movies and shows on there which I wanna watch on my CRT.
