Mi Box works best with WiFi?

by arrowrand

I'm trying to figure out why my Mi Box doesn't have network access when I've left it off for several hours and as part of that I unplugged my USB Ethernet adapter.

That solved a lot of problems for me.

Vudu isn't suffering frame drops anymore and neither is YouTube. Live Channels isn't buffering my HDHomeRun and Tablo playback has been perfect.

I have an ASUS RP-AC52 access point literally about 6 feet away from the Mi Box and I still get speed tests at or just over 100Mbps without the wire. I doubt that I will try another Ethernet adapter if the WiFi continues to perform like it has today.

Weird that the Wifi works better than ethernet but seems like some sort of ethernet adapter compatibility as ethernet should ALWAYS be faster.

10/100 Ethernet (which is the case for most android TV box) is limited at 100Mbps,

while ac Wifi can theoretically reach 1300Mbps and ~450Mbps in real life.

In the Kodi forums there is a guy that tested the WiFi vs usb ethernet speeds using the netflix test video. He (IIRC) got roughly 150mpbs faster speed on wifi-AC connection compared to what he got from his USB3 hub.

It is probably bottlenecking in the USB bus/hardware (whatever the correct term is) if I had to take a guess. Maybe similar to a raspberry pi.

For a new customer should one be used first instead of the other? I used the one in the box first and now I can't enter the emailed one.

Running mine solo on the 5GHz channel on my router with it on the other side of my 1100 sq' apartment & it network plays everything via VLC (basically everything) & Kodi (for 1:1 Bluray Remuxes with 7.1) with ease. If there's a storm, I may get a little 'fractal' decay or frame dropping, but otherwise it's butter if you're network is dialed in.
