Picture quality in Live Channels app: Nexus Player vs Shield TV

by pudgewack1

I currently have a nexus player, connected via Ethernet (USB adapter), and a HDHomerun extend. For the most part, I am happy with the setup. However, the picture quality of live TV in the Live Channels apps is not that great. I am curious is the nexus player is the reason for the not so good picture quality.

If I use Kodi on the NP with the HDHomerun add-on, picture quality is noticeably better than the Live Channels app. Also, the picture quality on a Linux box (Kodi with HDHomerun add-on) is much better the Live Channels app.

Is the nexus player the reason for the downgraded PQ when using Live Channels? Would a more powerful box like Shield TV improve the PQ in Live Channels?

I have transcoding turned off on the HDHomerun, so that is not the culprit.

Any info/suggestions would be appreciated.

My guess is they are probably using the native MediaPlayer library rather than ExoPlayer which has much better rendering and less initial lag. This is an issue for us as we couldn't get ExoPlayer working for Live Channels yet but I'm working right now to switch our in app library to ExoPlayer 2. In my initial internal tests it is much better than even EP1 and will look into updating to Live Channels to it as well.
