Android TV with Kodi

by sidarape

Hi everyone,

I am currently using a Raspberry Pi with Kodi to play videos on my TV. However, the thing I don't like is that the Raspberry Pi is not powerful enough to decode H.265 videos. So, I would like to buy an Android TV that supports Kodi. I need Kodi since it allows to play videos from an SFTP/HTTPS/Samba server. So, I've seen a couple of posts here about Mi Box. Anybody can tell me how Kodi runs on it? Or is there other devices that would be worth to buy instead?

Thank you.

im finding the Mibox is a massive upgrade from my Ras Pi 3. im actually able to play uncompressed/unencrypted bluray isos off my SMB shares over a Wifi AC network perfectly...

I've been running Kodi on my Mi Box since Saturday and it works great. I loaded all the normal Repos and whatnot, Popcorntime, Phoenix install and are butter smooth. I only have AVI and MKV files in my local library so can't really comment on anything other that that. Those files play great. Best purchase i've made in a while.

I have a MI box and kodi. If you can find a link to a legal h265 video somewhere that doesn't work for you let me know and I'll try it out.

The Mi Box may be powerful enough, not sure. But another thing you may try is to run Plex or Emby on your server, they will transcode -at the server- and then stream the video over to your Pi.

Maybe get Serenity on your Pi...Plex server is free and will transcode and Serenity will connect to it and play. Additionally, kodi can also connect to a Plex server and play files off it. Its what I've been using to stream off an old laptop (laptop is the server with Plex and kodi connects to it over the network, in my case WiFi)

https://wetek.com/product/wetek-play2 I don't really see this discussed much around here but it might be a good option for you.

I've got Sony KD-49X8307C (2015 4K TV with Android). I use KODI there and everything works really smoothly. I am not sure if I would recommend it for Android though, because outside of KODI the interface is really slow (I've heard it's way better in 2016 TVs). But KODI works really good. I used it on some 4K H.265 videos and most of them worked. Some were unplayable, but after updating KODI to the latest I had nearly no problem with the videos.

I use SPMC on the Mi Box & it plays HEVC 1:1 remuxes with 7.1 just fine, granted, some just wont work on VLC, but most do. Depends on what the file(s) were ripped with.. DVDFab is awful! My conversion software gives me warning messages specifically cautioning about using any rip made with it, especially VOB files, mangles DVD backups horribly.

That's bizarre. I have a bunch of them that just play with green video, perfect audio.

I have a very cheap nexbox a95x that ran a little slow from day 1. After a few weeks I found this app in the playstore - Speed up Swap. I think it works by using your sd card to help speed it up. within the app I moved the speed from slow to fast and wow, everything works so much faster and buffering is gone.
