I have a bad habit of buying electronic devices right before the newest model comes out. It seems like there are signs pointing to a new model of the Nvidia Shield TV being released soon, what do you guys think? Should I wait?

Buy the Shield. It will be a powerhouse for a couple of years at least. It is probably the best media device out there outside of a mini itx PC build.
If you want gaming, it's a good buy still.
If you need more multimedia, get a Mi Box.
Welp, looks like we're back to severely constrained availability of the Shield TV. http://androidtv.news/2016/10/shield-tv-models-stock-nvidia-online-store/
Nvidia's website is now out of both models. Amazon continues to be out of both. Looks like some Best Buys still have a few though. Unless Nvidia is going to discontinue this product altogether, which seems unlikely given the recent FCC filings, it's really odd that availability of the Shield TV is so constrained right now as we're about to head into the holiday shopping season. I'm still holding out hope that they're selling through the last of the current version and they're going to announce a refreshed version any day now...
So, I don't work for N'Vidia and don't want you to think that I'm blasting privileged information. I do know people that work for N'Vidia though..... and those folks are pretty good with keeping their product secrets....
N'Vidia is / will rely on longer hardware / product release cycles here. It's not their core business and frankly, their nearest competition is a very capable but sort of '2nd Tier' device that nobody has heard of. Folks that want a $69 box are buying a $69 box.... they're not going to shell out for a Shield (for the most part).
I bought my fourth shield two weeks ago. I'm not worried about it. The only risk would be on the gaming front - and think about that for a minute..... look at the wholesale prices on processors - look what N'Vidia just did in the PC market - the Shield is really profitable right now - upgrading it too quickly (and to what?) with a lukewarm competitive market isn't in their best interest.
I wouldn't worry about upgrading any time soon. Plus, playing the obsolescence game is silly because you never win - there's always opportunity cost. If the Shield available today does what you need it to, then it does what you need it to. Besides, when they do release a new box, it's going to be pricey at first so that it doesn't cannibalize existing Shield sales - and there's no shortage of those in the market right now.... lastly.... there will be 3-6 months where they're next to impossible to find..... I wouldn't wait.... hell, they could easily go another year without a new device, although I doubt if they'll go that long. My money is on a less expensive, less capable device on the low-end from NVidia before there's an 'upgrade' available.
Black Friday is not far off. I got $100 off my Shield last year on Black Friday. I'd wait.
I'm waiting until black Friday to buy one. If there's no deals I'll wait for CES. I'm actually pretty unhappy with my Mi Box.
Most places are sold out of the shield tv only 500gb left in some places
Nintendo just announced the Nintendo Switch. It will be powered by an Nvidia chip. Honestly it makes me think of a combination of the Nvidia tablet and Nvidia Shield TV, except it'll be running some Nintendo OS instead of Android.
I don't think Nvidia will launch a competing product right after the announcement or even release. Nintendo and Nvidia probably had discussions to make sure that doesn't happen. That might even be why the new Nvidia Tablet seems to have gotten canceled.
I've been really happy with both of my Nvidia Shield TVs. I don't think you'd regret buying one, even if Nvidia releases a new one in a few months.
If a new one is coming, I don't think its coming before next year. We're getting too close to holiday season, if they were going to release before the holidays, I would have at least expected an announcement by now, to start building some hype.
Even if they do release, the first gen shield is a steal for what you get, in terms of quality, support, and future proofing.
I learned a ~5-6 years ago, when I first started buying smart phones, that tech is evolving too quickly to wait for the next best thing, at least in these industries. And the funny thing is, the shield, released last year, is still more powerful than any streaming device released this year.
