MiBox surround sound

by miloworld

Hey, I'm having trouble getting surround sound off my MiBox.

I use HDMI ARC and Netflix only gets Stereo 2.0. Has anyone tried the S/PDIF and successfully getting 5.1 surround?

Also I enjoyed how Fire TV only enables 4K when it needs to eg Netflix, Youtube 4K etc. so other HD content can be upscaled by the TV.

What type of sound system are you using on the receiving end of the HDMI ARC? Does it support DD+? Many soundbar 5.1 systems older than a year or so do not support DD+ and if the MiBox doesn't automatically downconvert to DD then you get Stereo sound as a result.

Same types of issues here. FireTV 2, DD+ passes through to receiver perfectly on Netflix, Amazon video, etc. I also get DD and DTS passthrough with SPMC, no issues at all.

Mi Box, replace FireTV on same cable and all, no surround of any kind on Netflix, HBO, etc. SPMC will pass through DTS and DD just fine though. Setting the Mi to auto, it only detects PCM. Manually setting to HDMI, no change, 2 channel audio only.....except in SPMC.

Hopefully this can be corrected in a software update.

Netflix and streaming boxes don't play nice with surround sound. I have a nexus player, and to make it work I had to run HDMI with audio to the TV and then an optical cable from the TV to the receiver.

Download a 5.1 channel test video and throw that on USB to test and make sure 5.1 works with you current setup. If not, it's not a Netflix issue - check the following

BluRay player - sounds stupid, but some players have built it settings that can force 2.1 if they can't detect the surround.

MiBox - system settings can affect audio, double check what your audio output settings are

If it did work, double check your Netflix settings - sometimes Netflix will default to stereo if it doesn't detect 5.1 capability even though it's there. You may have to force change the settings.

If all else fails, grab an optical cable (they're pretty cheap on Amazon, with prime about 5 bucks depending on length, or through Primecables.com) and try that way. Your BluRay player is a receiver so you should be able to go direct, but sometimes the dvd/BluRay based systems are weird. As mentioned, mine only worked when I ran the HDMI feed through the TV and the optical back to the receiver, so tinker with your wiring - you should be able to find a setup that works

I have been trying to get DD/DTS to work on my Mibox via a mini Toslink cable to my older receiver that lacks HDMI inputs.

From my testing the mini Toslink will only output 2ch stereo in PCM. I have no been able to get any DD/DTS from the Mibox despite monkeying with all the sound settings on the box.

If anyone has gotten DD/DTS using SPDIF/Optical please let me know.

Xiaomi Mi TV Bar - I missed this when it came out, but i like the simplicity of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnbvbY-3hKk

5.1 surround sound on my netflix doesn't works too but works on my LG smart Tv Here's my setup: MiBox>HDMI>TV(LG)>HDMI(ARC)>HomeTheater(Samsung)

Build-in Netflix app on TV(Lg) works with 5.1 surround.

my MiBox is set with video via HDMI to projector and audio via SPDIF to ampli.

video file with Kodi or VLC work fine with 5.1 pass through. Plex or Netflix doesn't work with surround sound (no 5.1 icon).

Netflix support can't help me. Maybe there is a bug in app.
